The high schools and collegiate institutes of today had their beginning in the grammar` lschools of one hundred years ago. |These early-secondary schools were. Iestablished to prepare young men for the professions. We have a very? much larger proportion of students} attending secondary schools today,-` of both sexes and from all walks of life. There is room for only-a small; lpercentage of them in the teaching] [and other professions. The continu- ation school is-ex-tending the same, advantages out into the country,[ where the boys and girls from the; farm take practically the same course of studies. A beginning has beenj ugaub vAn\. ..-.---.- U- 1 made in` large urban centres to help young people t themselves for in- dustrial pursuits, while little has been done to adapt the `continuation school to rural agricultural needs. The fu- ture of (hnada depends on a happy, prosperous, contented rural popula- tion. Education should be an im- portant factor in making agriculture more prosperous. Can we hope for the co-operation of rural people among themselves and with the De- partment of Education to attain this end?
