From an acting standpoint, Miss "Chees- man was" undoubtedly the star. Sheggave a charming delineation of the young Amer- ican heiress, acting `with an ease and per- fect naturalness seldom seen except in those of much greater experience; As Marion, Mrs. H. J. Heath delighted everyone with her singing. Her part included several very difficult numbers, which sherendered with rare sweetness and fine musicianly . ` skill. Particular mention should be made of her brilliant rnditione of the . K s recitative and aria, No Hope is There i For Heart so Filled with Sorrow." Mr.` Huycke sang his numbers well and showed a good appreciation of his part.` The other roles were all well taken 'and the} opera throughout was of such a characterl ` as to provide a splendid form of entertain- ment. The music is of exceptionally fine quality, and the manner in which it was presented by soloists, chorus and orchestra. brought out its beauties well. The singing of the school children in two or three choruses was verygcreditable, and particular mention should be made of the ; solo work` of Beryl Wolfenden, Ida Lipo- vitch and Cora Brown. The play is given in three acts, in which is told the story of Marcel, a Swiss shep- herd boy, in his search for happiness.
