A. Cross and is address was given as Barr e. Pte. Cross. did not be- long to Barrie, his home being in Thornton. He came to Can- ada from England when a small lad of eight years of age under the direction of Dr. Barnardo s Homes, and spent the first nine years of his Canadian life with Arthur Postle of Thornton. Hav- ing been born hythe seaside and his fatherghaving been `a coast- guard keeper, he himself always had a__desire for boats. He spent two seasons on the Great Lakes. Whenlwar broke out he offered his services with the 35th Bn., but was rejected. When the 157th Simcoe Bn. was organized, he again offered his services, but was again rejected. In the fall of 1915 he was accepted into the 76th Bn. and. trained with. No. 4 Platoon, A Go., Gollingwood. `On. going to France he was drafted into the 20th and was wounded at the `Battle of the Somme on July 10,1916. He re- turned to active service in April and` on May 9, 1917, was `killed in action. His mother, who resides at 27 Montague Road,` Ramsgate, Kent, England, has three other sons, two in the _ Navy and one an infantry private who also en- listed in Canada.
