ttt w the stooffviue triwne thursday- amii 12 1956 t timmy presents trophy to peewee captainjchas cooper appointed head of claremont park committee pkobiem solved mr arthur latcham stoaee oenefanor at ti loca rark fca made contribution that perhaps xacy io not realize la previous seasons tije left sld of the outfem turned into a miniature lake folio icy the prng tha or a heavy rain consequently h players patrouiog this area became very ary of chatin ion rfy bail or fear of bostsni down n the duci pond a roipie of years aso mr latchaja noted the situation and made up his mind to do soraeiafas about it he improvised a icheme whereby the aate- drains ofl the grounds into a mill enclosure and then seeps ay through a drain xow the out- fed dries otsj very rapidly and the players w no longer be forced to wide through the water up until the middle of june as was the rar in former season in thi and manv other ways mr littham has made the stoufiriile memorial park a play ground of which everyone can be justly proud a home towx it is quieirtrfsjn so note during th past three or four year how many of slauffriilsi senior players have made this town their home when stouffviije moied into the senior ard intermediate raiks six or seven years ao resident players were at a premium xow we have the cream of the hockey crop who in their prime performed in many parts of canada and the united states thes sams stars many of whom are still active players here 3re always willing to end their support in the capacity of refereeirtr coachins and other gratis duties these men are not oniy actively interested in hockey but have brought renewed interest in softball back to stouffviile a sport that was on the decline here some of these players who have mado stouffviile their permanent residence are boh and nick bangay geo stark poily minton jack watson hal gibson howard korgle and a number of others besides theo men bob hassard a resident on lloyd avenue during the summer months takes an active interest in the welfare of the red soa dont think this town doesnt recognize and appreciate the con tributions made to both summer and winter sport here by these men the team to watch what are stonffvllles minor hockey prospects for next season 13 there a chance that one of our clubs might bring home a championship the men closest to our minor hockey setup are setting high hopes on our 195g57 midget club to give a good account of themselves with a sprinkling of talent left over from this years team plus a number of tine performers tip from the bantams it would appear that stouttville can ice a real contender it b presumed that derek chadwick and dave hammerslpy will continue to coach and manage the club again next winter there is a possibility that the tine trio of norm hendricks glenn peimanen and rick wedseltoft will be re united again hendricks the older of the three had an excellent season in midget this winter and is still eligible again next year for midget class hockey stouffviile should also have a good juvenile team since ninety per cent of last seasons club win be back again on paper at the present time we cant see too much for next winters bantam club although time will tell a number of this winters better peewee players will likely it in along with a number of holdovers with the ontario semifinalists this season all in all the old crystal ball predicts plenty of hockey action on the minor front for next winter defending champs with the windup of thp hockey season here a couple of weeks ago it is quite natural for our thoughts to turn toward baseball although the season for summer sports is still a little premature there has been some discussion concerning the plans of the red sox and the tricounty league the first definite move has been made by orlllia wiio recently requested that the loop give consideration to an entry from the- lake simcoe centre any new blood in the alreadyflourishing group is good news the only hitch in the setup is the rather lengthy hop from orillia to port perry the latter club has no lighting facilities in their park which would make it necessary for all games to get under way early in the evening as far as stouffviile is concerned with our floodlights it is possible to play the game at a later hour orillia is equipped with a modern floodlit field another idea which has been mentioned often around these parts is the hope that the red sox would go oba this summer fans like nothing better than to see unfamiliar teams in action and oba competition would bring these distant clubs to town for playoff action there has been some talk of the red sox going oba and we hope the homesters will give it an honest try this summer we realize that oba competition has its drawbacks afternoon games long distance travelling in clement weather etc hut we think that stouffviile has a club equal to any town of similar size perhaps in a couple of weeks more information will be available the samk stottr the organizers of the goderlch peewee tournament must get rather discouraged each year when without fail a hassle develops to throw- cold water on their enthusiastic efforts last spring it was newmarket who upset the apple cart by playing overage lads and although they were the champions in their respective group they had to return the cup following an inves tigation into the birth certificates held by some of the boys this year aylmer winners in the d series withdrew from further competition because the coach chit simpson claimed their opposition teds pals of toronto iced a packed club i personally ihlnk that there should be a thorough screening of men who act as coaches on our minor hockey teams any man who would pull his peewee team off the ice because the opposition looked too strong shouldnt he handling a hockey club of any kind its high time these men learned that in kids hockey the ability to win isnt the important thing its the opportunity for young hoys to learn and play he game that really count how do you think the aylmer players felt about leaving the ice without taking partin the contest even if they lost by ten goals it wouldnt be a disgrace to pull a club off the ice is a disgrace however a disgrace to the teams management what would our town think of coach bill lennox if he took our peewee entry iso miles to goderich and then refused to play them because the rival team was too sfrong its too ridiculous to even consider stouffviile has taken part in the gode tourney for the past two seasons and on each occasion they havebeen beaten last year by port perry and this year by wlngham perhaps they weredlsappointed in not winning every club likes to win but the experience gained from playing against opposing teams from different towns is worth more than all the championships in the world the sooner the sponsors get rir of these crackpot coaches the better it will be for minor league hockey in general every year teams from all over ontario yes and even distant centre- throughout the dominion are entering in the goderich tourney every year without fail large headlines are flashed across thp sport pages of our daily papers which read coach pulls team from goderich tournament team to protest use of illegal players coach refuses to play against packed club these reports are exaggerated you say perhaps in some cases they are but lie basic facts are only too true the only solution to the situation asi see it 1 for he omha o step in and inves tigate surh incident- and where roarhe and managers are found to be at fault tney should be suspended from future participation in organizes minor hockey such practices have a had influence not only on the tournament and the players but the entire omha setup keys
