134th birthday sept 25 on sunday sept 25th the congregation of the claremont baptist church will mark their 34th anniversary rev low- den will preach at both the morning and evening services at 11 am special music will be provided bv the choir and mr haroi dean soloist at the evening service a trio and soloist from the toronto choral society will be present resi dents of the village and sur rounding district are welcome the local congregation was formed back in 1821 the honor of first organization as a christian church in the town ship of pickering is due to the baptist denomination there is little record available for the twenty years following but it is known that services were held fairly regularly many of the services were held at the home of mr joshua wixon on the seventh concession of pick ering the congregation contin ued to grow in the islos and in april 1st the church met in the schoolnouse on the 7th concession of pickering mr stephen mantle and mr david evans were appointed church elders it was at this meeting that it was decided to purchase a site on the 0th concession ana ouiid a plank nouse messrs anthony avery david evans and francis derusha were appointed trustees to hold the deed of the land purchased from mr joseph wixon the church was not completed until 1851 during the early isgos the need for a new chapel became apparent and in 1864 it was de cided to erect a more perma nent meeting house two years later the church which is still used by the congregation was completed the strength of the congregation was increased in 1 1s70 when the baptist church on the seventh concession de- cided to unite with the clare mont charge elder g p frise was engaged as palor in the year 1s5s at a salary of 250 and his firewood he resigned at the end friends to a cornroast on saturdav evening mrs m draper mrs l leh man and family motored to or angeville one day recently and visited mr and mrs charles lehman and family mr ken chafen and two of his chums have returned from a very enjoyable trip to new york mr and mrs r hamilton visited with mr and mrs tom robinson of locust hill on sunday we are pleased to hear that mrs bert gilhurley was able to resume her journey with her husband to their home in carmen manitoba following her accident the ladies aid will hold their regular meetirfg at the home of mrs a pearse on wed nesday sept 2s at 8 pm a cordial invitation is extended to all ladies dont forget the family film night to be held in the church on thursday sept 22 at 8 pm there was a good attendance at the rally and promotion day at the baptist sunday school and the guest speaker was miss hazel reesor who has recently returned on furlough from af rica miss reesor was also the speaker for the evening service in the church a police south ontario pipeline route is set the route to be followed bi ts trans canada pipeline through southern ontario was revealed during a hearing be fore the board of transport commissioners in ottawa this week the board was hearing an objection raised by toronto township to the route through that municipality the pipeline will stretch 335 miles from sheridan just west of toronto to ste anne de rellevue on montreal island a 40mile spur will take gas north from morrlsburg to ot tawa and hull this spur will run to the east of highway no 31 and will pass a short dis tance east of winchester from sheridan there will be 25 miles of 24inch pipe to a i point east of woodbridge from there on to ste anne the pipe will be of 20inch diameter the morrisburgottawa spur will be 12 pipe at sheridan the line will pick up gas brought there by a j transcanada subsidiary from the niagara border avoiding buildup areas the line will then run to a point near cooks ville circling malton airport i will 25th ii am music by the church choir mr h r dean guest soloist 730 pm guests from the toronto choral society a ladies trio a baritone soloist the minister will preach at both services claremont cooperative association claremont ontario notice is hereby given that the annual meeting of the claremont cooperative association will be held on wednesday sept 28 1955 at 830 pm in the claremont rev m buttars will have charge of the service and the home choir will lead the music on october 2 sunday school goodwood sympathy is extended to mrs norman maye whose fa ther mr robert tweedie of whitevale passed away last week we are sorry to report that mr and mrs harwcod have sold their property and will be moving to stouffville soon we will miss them greatly you are reminded of the w a of flu the wedding of miss gladys bidewell of calgary alberta and rev benson jones of burtch and goodwood took place on friday september 1g we wish this young couple every success in married life little kathy hudson has re turned home with her parents mr and mrs bill hudson after being with her grandparents mr and mrs frank collins for several weeks bypu will be held on thu rsday evening with
