been in business and made money ever since oming through good times and bad he says in fact that he even managed to make money dining the depression of the 30 when a great many deal- tars were forced out of business charlie had his start in 1120 when his father purchased a hardware store with living quarters on the second storey just to have a place to live charlie puts it his father frank cooper was not too interested ill business being a successful farmer so charlie took over while his dad bought more land close by to clare- mont and continued farming in addition to the hardware lines the business also repre sented the mccormick line of farm implements for inter national harvester company in the area in 12 charlie bought the business from his father and took on the agency for durant cars continuing as international harvester dealer things were different in the farm equipment business than they are today he re calls as a matter of fact we were more like spotters than following on the heel dealers wed find the prospects depression it created and the company bibekman would come along and close the deals in mast cases we had no money invested in repair parts uid almost all service problems were taken care of by a com pany man referred to as au expert know them today dealers themselves never dreamed that the day would come when it would be to their interest to organize their own tradeassoc- iation and hold such impor- 1 tant events as the annual ohfeda show kxpands car business a few years after he had taken on the durant agency charlie cooper started selling international trucks when around l3i durant motors passed out of the car business he took on chrysler dodge and plymouth along with fargo trucks within the next two months he was appointed gen eral motors dealer and today still handles the entire genera motors line as have many other dealers charlie has found the motor car business to be a valuable adjunct to his farm equipment line although by no means the most impor tant part of hi overall oper ation change in machines ways o doing business are no the only things that have changed since 1 started there charlie well remembers the wartime shortages of farm equipment which resulted from the necessity of diverting raw- materials and plant facilities to the production of war goods the her difficulties for the trade and also of course for farmers themselves the poor sales of the depression years had re- milted in much of the machin ery on farms deteriorating to very poor condition so that throughout most of the war years dealers had to roll up their sleeves and do a real ser vice job to keep these machines tolling this job was thai much more demanding because of erlv managed and good man agement of the sales end of i the business will be required more than ever now that com- petition has become tough and sales harder to come by association leader charlie coopers name has long been closely identified with dealers association aetivi- j ties he recalls that in the fall of 1944 the late cor wilkin son who was then blockman for international harvester for the area in which the clare mont dealership is located got a goodly number of interna tional dealers together to dis cuss their mutual problems and other matters pertaining to the trade out of this meeting came the formation of the groups own local company association with walter atkinson who un til recently was international dealer at stoutlville ontario as chairman this was actually the birth of the ontario retail farm equipment dealers associa tion because in
