put them there are oranges and lemons on the trees but not so many as in florida the streets are very narrow and there are few private homes mostly apartments today is monday washday in sicily everybody hangs the washing on the outside wall of their apartment a few string a line from the hydro or tele phone poles they dont have any clothespegs they have to tie the washing on the line with string the kids look heal thy and happy in spite of the wretched housing the plaster is falling off the outside of the houses and there are only rough stones underneath after dinner we took a taxi the driver spoke no english he took us up the mountain also to the parliament build ings and churches the walls and ceiling of which are magni ficently done we drove up one avenue with lovely hedges on each side more like england we visited the museum hous ing many interesting relics a tableful of wooden models of the slaughter of the innocents two royal carriages we happened up a funeral the hearse drawn by two pairs of fine horses looking like a millionaires fourinhand a horse carriage alongside car ried the flowers sicily seems to be all mountains big high ones and they are mostly shaped as if 21st at 8 oclock in the church parlors illuminated curling broom introduced among the inventions which seem slated to rock the curling world ls the illuminated curl ing broom which was first in troduced at the temiskaming and northern ontario curling association bonspiel at kirk- land lake in 1950 this broom was used exclusively by its co- inventor and manufacturer dr r p smith of timmins the illuminated broom has created considerable interest among curlers who are honest enough to admit that there are numerous occasions where they have missed their shots due to the fact that they were not able to see the broom color blindness according to statistics com piled from medical records it is surprising to find a great number of people are color blind and when this condition is present among curlers it tends to make the game hazar dous added to this particular con dition there are those who have difficulty seeing the far end of the rink this may be due to the lighting in the rink the foggy atmosphere of bonspiels in general failing eyesight and the improper use of bonspiel eye drops to allow this condition to continue the game would de teriorate therefore as a meas ure of safetv and as a boon to good curling dr r p smith and tomer smith of ottawa embodied the red and green lights used in traflic rules on this new revolutionary broom since the introduction of this broom two years ago when it was the intention of the co- inventors to produce a patent it was found due to some un foreseen objections on the part of the base metal industry that such a move was not fit and proper at the moment great fears were expressed that it would become so popu lar that the manufacture of countless thousands would ne cessitate the use of so much material as to endanger the success of the great st law rence seaway as well as the war in korea on the other hand since it has been so enthusiastically received in various curling cir cles it has been decided to con tinue experimental investiga tion at a high level under the wartime secrets act use walkictalkio last minute information just released by the production en gineering department indicates success in an experiment whe reby a walkietalkie is being used curlers everywhere should follow this invention with un dying interest and everyone is assured that this great cureall for blind curlers will soon be available to any curlers out side of the iron curtain the company has been form ed but no stock has been is sued successful completion of upholstered light model for lady curlers was just announ ced staggered hours the children are again back to regular hours mrs c steckley spent tues day with her daughter mrs macdonaid of caledon the sr wms entertained the jr sewing circle in the tnited missionary church on
