ontario department of agri culture reminded growers that potatoes from crops infected with bacterial ring rot dis ease must be disposed of by january 31st under a ruling of the plant diseases act the potatoes may be sold as table stock ar culls for cattle feed but must not under any cir cumstances be used as seed growers are required to make a report to the depart ment of agriculture by jan 31 and before april 1 must thor oughly disinfect all storages machinery utensils etc that may have come in contact with the potatoes it will also be necessary to secure new dis easefree seed for planting in 1955 this year crops grown by ap proximately 200 of the gooto potato growers- in ontario are affected by these regulations which came into force in 1913 i the potato growers themselves i requested the regulations as a means of preventing and con trolling the spread of this com paratively new potato disease which was found a few years earlier in the eastern provin ces since that time the dis ease has been found in all pro vinces and in practically all potato growing areas in the united states peak year of infection in ontario was 1946 when 673 cases were reported bacterial ring rot disease is described by plant pathologists as the most infectious and de structive seedborne potato dis ease on the north american continent during the early years of the disease losses were high but recently only a small percentage of the crop was found to be infected in the most serious eaes discovered the disease organism does not overwinter in the soil but may be carried on bags and machin ery in order to maintain a source of high quality seed about so potato growers in the la fon taine area of north simcoe county banded together and es tablished a restricted seed po tato area all of these growers plant foundation or certified seed and give special attention to seed selection care during the growing season etc lists of these growers together with others in he province may be obtained from the
