not act as he was not in favour of a commission constituted in this manner councillor mc carron stated that the plan ning board should name the commission from among its own members its not nec essary to have another board the more bodies you have the more delays in doing business with these people when they want to come here he de clared councillor iegge who pro posed the motion took the view that a separate commis sion was best and would make for more cooperation with council and the planning board councillor graham who sec onded the resolution said that he would be willing to lay the resolution over until the coun cil and planning board could get together on the matter councillor leggo declared that the reeve had to call for vote on the motion which eventual ly carried he stated on wednesday january 27th a the mark ham nursing home still horn markham township council threw up the first bulwark on monday against rising school costs which would jeopardize the financial standing of the municipality council on a re corded vote agreed to ask york county to assume the is suing of an soo000 debenture for a new high school at thorn- hill the only dissenting vote- was that of councillor arthur lennie the move to ask county council to issue the huge loan was brought about by vaugh an townships refusal to issue their share of the school deb enture which is 47 in most cases of which taxpayers local ly are familiar the municipal ity in which the school is lo cated has issued the total a- mount of the debentures how ever the act provides that each municipality may issue its share markham township reeve lemasurier pointed out is pre sently carrying very large de bentures and will surely find their borrowing power cur tailed should another three- quarter million loan have to be floated it was therefore proposed at last weeks meet ing that vaughan twp should be asked to assume their share of the- loan which is 47 markhams share of the deben ture is 24 members of vaughan coun cil appeared at the markham meeting on monday and gave a definite xo answer to the proposal in reviewing the townships debt picture reeve lemasurier stated that if markham had to shoulder this large debt the municipal board might refuse by next spring to allow markham to proceed with the needed public schools and in addition all contempla ted water debentures would have to be dropped clerk jim matdonald of vaughan twp provided com parative debt figures which revealed that vaughans total debt was slightly below mark- hams at the present time but had been higher for four to five years previous the vau ghan township debt had been brought about mainly by pub lic school debts along yonge st in which markham town ship could not have shared had council even chose to do so since no provision is in the act for the sharing of deben tures in the case of public schools solicitor jd lucas who was present at the meeting ad vised markham council that they should reconsider issuing the debenture if vaughan re fused to shoulder its share deputy reeve rutherford of vaughan stated that the met ropolitan board might refuse window peepers beware in pickering township at a special meeting of pick ering twp council on wed nesday evening of last week a bylaw was passed prohibiting the practice of window peep ing in the municipality the bylaw was introduced follow ing the hearing of a case in whitby court in which a resi dent in the south pickering district was caught red handed in the act of peeping through a window the curious offend er was released however when the judge discovered that pickering twp had no bylaw governing such an offense air and mrs lou raxlin recently married couple have returned home from florida and will make their homo in the new sanders subdivision on rose ave stouffville pils to attend weston school which would necessitate a new school at woodbridge 1 have no objection to issu ing their share said reeve lemasurier were ready to handle our part and vaughan apparently is not so if the ratepayers who need the school want to kick they had better go to vaughan he con tinued councillor lennie stood out as the lone opponent to forcing vaughan to issue their share of the loan we gave commit ment to the board that wed issue the debentures last fall and well have to go through with it he declared reeve lemasurier replied that the financial picture chan ged considerably since then and it was up to council to give first consideration to their own ratepayers councillor little suggested that it might be best to ask the county to issue the loan im not going out on a limb to burden debt on the people of markham and its they who put me here and them im working for let vaughan pay their 47 share and if its a case as mr lennie says of hurting vaughans feelings well have to hurt their feel ings as far as im concerned council with the exception of councillor lennie all con curred in the reeves stand and agreed to ask the county to is sue the debenture failing this it appeared that the school would be at a stand still unless vaughan would change their mind about tak- at any time to allow their puling on their share of the debt destitute families at- lake ft problem for whitchurch wed all be a lot happier if it were only the skiing season that is giving our country the jumps reeve roberts dr roberts pointed out that in his business he had a daily cheek on each man under his employ the dep reeve stat ed that he would construct a form and work out the propo sed system with road super intendent roy ward council lors relief from families at wilcox lake were posing a problem and asked direction in carry ing out his duties constable mulholland stated that almost all the men of these near des titute households were em ployables out of work he cit ed that in two cases there were six small children to be con sidered and almost all the fam ilies had two and three kid dies there are 31000 out of work in toronto and apparen tly some just cant find work he said the matter of provid ing township work for some of the men was mentioned and reeve mclaughlin said that he believed there was work to be had on the east side of the township constable mulholland told council that the breadwinners of some of the families were in jail and some families had been deserted its keeping the police on the un checking up the thefts he reported the situation is much worse than a year ago the rents he reported were extremely high and relief aid would only just keep them a- live some are receiving notic es to vacate he reported unless there are extenuat ing circumstances im not in favor of giving ablebodied men relief when theres work declared councillor mccarron there may be some deserving but i feel many are not clerk jack crawford ex plained that unless the bread winner was arrested or they could produce a doctors certi ficate of unfitness the prov ince refused to pay their 50 of the relief if you open the gate for one theyll all hear about it and flock in like sheep said councillor legge why should the township help pay rent for some greedy individuals continued coun cillor iegge the relief officer was
