bioomington side- road on dec 2nd pleaded not guilty in magistrates court last week he was driving a loaded dump truck when he collided with a car driven by gerrick munnick rr 2 stouffville who was driving south on the 7th concession thorn had on his truck about 7 tons of sand and said he saw the other car coming as he approached the intersection the collision sent three of munnieks child ren to hospital and munnick himself was unconscious after the accident his car suffered extensive damage to the front the truck was damaged on j the right side magistrate hol- linrake said here is a truck benefit of the new members of york county council the reforestation committee last week reviewed the history of reforestation in the county since 1921 in that year the county of york entered into an agree ment with the department of lands and forests whereby land would be acquired plant ed and maintained for refores tation purposes since then the county has acquired 3106 acres of land at a cost of 63- 50 1x5 the bulk of this land is known as vivian forest this agreement was for 30 years and expired this year 1951 in june 1952 the commit tee recommended that ar rangements be made to extend the agreement for an addition al 20 years this was done and in 1953 mr de gage of the depart ment of lands rnd forests has worked closely with the reforestation committee and the following projects markham township council on monday evening received requests for m additional ex penditure of 155000 for new public school facilities both requests came from the hen derson ave district school section no 1 a union section with vaughan twp the hen derson ave school requires a fourroom addition estimated to cost 75000 and the section also asks for 80000 for a sec ond school the new school es timate is slightly higher than that for the addition as a site must be purchased and a com plete new plumbing job would be required in the new build ing reeve lemasurier stated that it would be necessary to get the approval of vaughan township for this expendit ure the reeve drew councils at tention to the heavy burden which was lowering itself on the township in the matter of school costs the matter of the new 800000 high school at thornhill was cited and the new markham and stouffville high schools reeve lemasurier stated that while the township solic itor had advised that an effort should be made to have the county issue the debentures for the thornhill school he had been unable in talking to county council members to find sufficient support for the idea mr lucas solicitor poin ted out that the townships borrowing power could be come jeopardized by everin creasing debenture debts and pointed out the case of rich mond hill which has reached a dangerous debt level failing to have the county take on the soo000 deben tures for the thornhill school the solicitor recommended that vaughan twp be asked to issue their own share of the debentures which is 17 with markham issuing the balance markhams exact share of the debt is only 21 these figures being based on the present e- qualized assessment the sol icitor added that he had not considered whether wood- bridge should be asked to is sue their share of the deben tures or not councillor lennie asked that a meeting be held with the high school board since a commitment had been given them that markham would is sue the debentures meet on salaries a special meeting of couicil will be held shortly to discuss the municipal salary scale and possible changes a report from the police committee recommended con sideration to a pension scheme for the police the report also stated that the local police be lieved their salaries should be on a par with vaughan town ship the matter of radio- equipped cars was also men tioned as a muchneeded asseti the neighbouring munici palities will have to pay more for fire protection or well be forced to keep our engine in town stated reeve henry ogden at the regular meeting of stouffville town council on saturday afternoon at the present rate were losing mon ey a new pressure pump hits been purchased for the stouff ville fire truck at a cost of 2 0g this pump is used for fighting outoftown fires under the present system stouffville ratepayers are pay ing for a pump that is used in outside municipalities point ed out councillor burk council agreed that in a few years time it would be neces sary to purchase a new fire truck which would cost in the neighbourhood of 10000 clerk garfield brown in formed council that already this year they had received six outoftown calls four to mark ham twp ami two in whit church last year the local bri gade answered twenty three calls to outside municipalities nine to whitchurch eight to markham five to uxbridge and one in pickering there were eight fire calls in stouffville councillor rateliff consider ed the present fire rate agree ment as being ridiculous a motion was passed that the pickering and whitchurch fire areas be terminated as of march 1st and the markham and uxbridge present per call rate be terminated as of march 1st and negotiations be enter ed into for a lire agreement stouffville council will meet with the four township coun cils at their first regular meet ing in february council hands off policy in garbage business if the businessmen want extra garbage collection they can call in an outsider de clared councillor booth at the saturday meeting of council and other members concurred in this view this statement arose when harold dixon representing the stouffville chamber of com merce appeared before i coun cil to take steps to see that the private garbage collector pro vide more service mr dixon said that it had been suggest ed that the town maintenance man might serve as an added helper for the garbage collec tor but reeve ogden protest ed any such move stating that the maintenance man had more to do now than he was able reeve ogden stated that there had been a few com plaints is slowly re covering friends will be plea sed to learn friends will regret to learn that mr john scott is in criti cal condition at his home in blackstock among friends who passed away of called there sunday were mr fish are fond of music says a professor just as we suspected in the night clubs markham township council sitting in regular session on monday evening received the resignations of both their plumbing inspector and buil ding inspector mr les galbraith has been plumbing inspector for three years council had agreed that with the county health unit offering plumbing inspection services the township could no longer justify this office and mr galbraith was offered the post of purchasing agent for the municipality however he told council that he would rather not undertake the or ganizing of any new depart ments and tendered his resig nation which was accepted mr galbraith the tribune learns will enter the real es tate business in thornhill reeve lemasurier stated in accepting the resignation that the township had been quite happy with mr galbraiths services mr ross norton building inspector also tendered his resignation which was like wise accepted in his letter of resignation mr norton stat ed on the 15th of feb of this year i will have served five years as i building inspector for the township of markham i have had plenty of problems to overcome but i have aiways tried to be fair and firm in the course of my duties i feel that i have done a fair job now that i have been asked to accept dual respoasibility and a great deal more work t feel that it would be impos sible for me to give the ser vice that would be expected by the public and your coun cil with deep regret i hereby tender my resignation as building inspector to become effective on march 1st the resignation was accept ed without comment and coun cil instructed the clerk to ad vertise for applications for a new inspector
