of mrs w benson with 30 a- dults and 0 children present including visitors after roll call and business had been dispersed with mrs j morg an and airs j peddie reported the highlights of the domin ion of destiny pageant held recently in maple leaf gard ens with additional com ments by guest mrs heron of brooklin president of s ont ario wi and secretary of the acww while in session for a number of days in toronto previous to the pageant mrs mcconnell contributed simil arly altogether presenting quite a thrilling picture to those who had missed seeing and hearing of the nations hi storical achievements and the part wis have played through the past fifty years miss mae brown of green wood was also a special visit or and mrs hoover and her sister who contributed a beau tiful vocal duet mrs heron passed around a number of miscellaneous gifts presented to her by various women of the acww and said she had become personally acquainted with all of them a bountiful dainty lunch was served by the group the president than ked the hostess and those who had contributed towards the exceptional program at the close mission band was conduct ed by supt mrs v evans assisted by miss ann fran cis president and master al an lackey secretary on sun day morning with 19 members present boxes of cards were distributed to scholars at the close proceeds when sold will go to foreign missionary work mr and mrs j harris and children also mrs a harris are touring through the wes tern provinces and visiting relatives during the month mr and mrs davis and neigh bours are attending to the farm duties during their ab sence mrs a condy is visiting with relatives in toronto dur ing the week master donald evans was rushed to the hospital where an appendix operation was performed last saturday even ing the mission band mem bers are sending him a fine sympathy card with their names written within its pag es the good fellowship class members enjoyed a corn roast last friday evening at the home of mr and mrs peters recent purchasers of the late joe evans farm on the 9th concession mr and mrs frank carson attended the informal recep tion and supper last sunday evening at the oac at guelph where their eldest son keith has enrolled for a l yr bsa course completing at the college of education we understand there is a very large enrollment this year with insufficient rooming ac commodation the united church wa will hold their annual bazaar on saturday afternoon nov ember 21st in the church basement mrs g mcconnell recently enjoyed a twelve day visit in kansas where her parents re latives are living we are glad this busy woman found time for a holiday and that she was quite content to return home to her numerous duties st its close mrs f redshrvs daugh ter and soninlaw mr and mrs d coates and son of brooklin were sunday visit ors with her mr and mrs howard hock ley were sunday visitors with ner sister at bethesda mr and mrs maloney of o- hawa were visitors with miss dororhy hockley on sunday mr and mrs c keevil are building a new home on prop erty at rear of mr b mcleod adjacent to mr e bakers cot tage taylors restaurant will be closed until further notice as the interior is being fully modernized the annual meeting of the claremont coop will be held on wednesday evening sept 30th at s30 pm the meeting will be preceded by a tuvkey dinner at c30 tickets may be obtained at the coop or from any directors the new oil heating system in the claremont united church will probably be op erating by sunday mr clare keevil spent the weekend at his cottage at port perry mr and mrs wm wallace of altona were sunday visitors at mrs conners mr and mrs jack badgerow spent sunday at the home yf delbert catherwood in wl-it- by mr ken ward local austin sales agent has greatly im proved the front portion of his garage with a paved drive the young peoples society of the united church started their fall meetings on monday night in the sunday school room friends from toronto were sunday guests at the home of mr and mrs art spencer the claremont baptist church will celebrate its an- iversary service this sunday september 27th morning and evening with the wellknown rev wa cameron formerly of yorkminster baptist church toronto as special speaker come and enjoy these servic es with us mysterious gas odour pollutes part of village for the past couple of weeks a mysterious gas has been seeping into numerous homes and business places on tha claremont main street and is causing considerable concern among the affected residents mrs gordon taylor operator of the claremont restaurant reports a strong smell of gas in the evenings and other ow ners are experiencing the same discomfort a number of children have fallen ill and al though it was first believed to be summer flu it has lately been attributed to the escap ing gas fumes dr xf tom- linson has been called in to check on the situation but at present time the source of the flow has not been discovered shown after their mar riage on september 5th in wnitevale united church are mr and mrs george h duncan the bride was formerly barbara bruce daughter of mr and mrs bruce of green river the grooms parents are mr and mrs william duncan green river they the parents of john wonnacott paid a brief visit to terra cotta on sunday james and mrs davidson visited lake simcde on sunday the canadian countryside has not lost much of its beauty as yet clare and mrs gunter of burlington were weekend vis itors at westglen farm the anniversary services at the local church nere will be held next sunday afternoon t 3 pm the rev george em- pey of centennial church will be the speaker the local choir will assist in the services vis itors will be welcomed miss barbara pratt of pet- erboro has been visiting her parents gk and mrs pratt here audley fall wheat seeding is about completed here while the ac reage is still a little below last year corn is being ensiled this week although there is not the ajnount of corn raised as formerly as many put hay in to their silos which can be done earlier in the year and does not entail so much labor at a busy time jack annan and wife of whitby visited with his par ents here on the weekend annual meeting of the claremont cooperative will be held on wednesday sept 30th at s30 pm in the claremont community hall guest speaker mr a musgrave director united cooperatives of ontario banquet at 630 pm in the united church basement brownies and guides receive their badges the brownies of the 1st claremont branch have now completed their tribute to her majesty the queen by pre senting to the baptist sunday school picture of queen elizabeth they also painted the sunday school chairs in various pastel shades the new drapes and painted chairs gained them the honor of wearing the coronation badg es in honor of the queen flo wers will still be provided for the shutins as long as they re main in the garden any young lady who is between the age of eight and eleven years wil be made welcome at the brow nies meetings which are held every thursday evening at the claremont baptist church at 7 oclock the leaders and guides had an enjoyable evening at the home of mrs ed boniface by having a weirier roast toast ing marshmallows and harm onizing in various songs on wednesday evening sept 1g the guides also completed their tribute to her majesty the queen and gained the hon or of wearing their corona tion badges by painting the chairs in the same sunday school most guides are wear ing their uniforms and any young girl between the ages of lil and 10 will enjoy the guide meetings which are held every wednesday even ing at 7 oclock in the clare mont baptist sunday school mrs e jamieson and roy at their summer cottage on lake kushog in haliburton mr winton white won sev eral firsts and seconds and 1 grand champion on his cattle at beaverton fair on satur day mr and mrs cecil disney and family visited sunday with mr and mrs lloyd broome at hampton friends are sorry to hear that little donald evans is in the sick childrens hospital and was operated on for ap pendicitis next sunday sunday school will be at 10 ajn owing to greenwood anniversary there will be no church service congratulations to mr and mrs joseph forsythe on the birth of a baby girl born on sunday september 20th at port perry hospital balsam and mt zion mrs robt nesbitt of pine grove gave a very interesting talk on her trip to the british isles at the active service class meeting held at the ja mieson home last wednesday night donald and marian jamie- son spent the weekend with the reason no one is repor ting flying saucers now is that the kind that could be seen and heard have become obi- lete- the newer models now visiting the earth are when mrs k creighton of oshawa will be the guest speaker this meet ing will be at the home of mrs wm pegg mrs dawson serv ed lunch at the close the anniversary services and turkey dinner will be held on sunday the 27th and tuesday night the 20th the sunday services will be in charge of rev mr crosier of whitby with the home choir in the morning at ii oclock and pickering united church in the evening at 730 the fol- brougham mr and mrs bill reauian of pickering visited with hisj parents mr and mrs- s rea- man on sunday mr and mrs h robertson of toronto visited with mrs lemmon on sunday afternoon mr and mrs ferd von-mey- er of detroit visited her aunt and uncle mr and mrs m hamilton and other friends during the weekend mr and mrs wallace elli- cott of toronto visited at the home of his parents on sun day mr and mrs pennal and fa mily of toronto visited with al and mrs harvey and family on sunday afternoon sorry to hear that mr wm ellicott is in oshawa hospital where he is receiving treat ment his many friends wish him a speedy recovery brougham ball team has done it again they journeyed to edgar again on sunday af ternoon to meet edgar air- force team for the second time resulting in a win of fi3 for brougham congratula tions brougham mr and mrs irvin shea and family of cherrywood cal led on his parents henry and mrs shea on sunday the september meeting of the wms of st johns unit ed church was held on thurs day afternoon sept 17 at the home of mrs n burton with a good attendance the presid ent mrs h barclay was in charge of the meeting which was opened by singing hymn 669 the devotional was in charge of mrs lackey assist ed by mrs re ellicott mrs reaman and mrs hugh mil ler the minutes of the previ ous meeting were read also hymn 241 was sung the pro gram was taken from the stu dy book around the world stressing that all churches should be one even as christ is one the roll call was an swered by the word shine the meeting closed with hymn 249 and prayer hostes ses were mrs n burton mrs r ellicott mrs manson elli cott and mrs ray ellicott rally day services were held in st johns church last sunday afternoon conducted by rev h lackey assisted by mr geo duncan sunday school supt the services next sunday will be held at the re gular hours of 130 pm and 2- 30 pm rev h lackey will be con ducting a special service at his home town of fraserville on next sunday and rev mr yarr of fraserville will be in charge of the service here lowing tuesday evening a turkey dinner will be served until all have justice din ner at 6 oclock also a bazaar and fish pond come along and enjoy the evening of the 29th aduits 125 and public school children 50c mr and mrs wm pegg cel ebrated their 2oth wedding an niversary last saturday after noon and evening despite the weather about 150 guests were there some came all the way from manitoulin is to ronto owen sound sudbury oshawa pickering whitby and uxbridge and neighbours and friends of the surround ing vicinity the pegg family presented them with a silver coffee pot and bonbon dish also gifts from relatives and friends a bouquet of gladioli came from mrs peggs home town on manitoulin island mr and mrs pegg were very pleased to have so many call on them on this occasion to wish them many more years of married life together mr and mrs c mctaggart entertained friends mr and mrs newman from the island last sunday mr and mrs hicks visited for a couple of days in the states this last week mr moss minaker returned home from the hospital last sunday following an operation one day last week during the service last sun day morning mr and mrs d morden presented their infant son larry andrew for bap tism rev and mrs moore return ed home from their holidays last saturday mrs p wilson accompanied by john and mrs puckrin of audley attended the funeral of the late mr alex brown of stouffville last thursday af ternoon well greenwood won the ball game from the 1th line last friday
