club hits the playoffs the ouch will usually stress the importance of winning the first time it is generally regarded that the team who can carry oil ihe top honors in the opening contest lias a decided edge in the r this fact has been proven wrong during a number of ockey playoffs that have just been concluded you may recall jlearly the first game between boston and detroit in the semi final round for the stanley cup when the powerful bed wings jmothered the llruinsbj a score of ft4 boston recovered from ihis early setback to knock off the wings and enter the finals cingston goodyeats of the senior b grouping literally shocked ihe experts by losing the first game in each of their four playoff rounds and yet bounced right back on every occasion to win the hamponship kingston dropped their playoff opener to helle- yille oshawa iyndhurst motors and woodstock but each time jhey made a victorious comeback at one point in their series ivith the motor city squad the cioodyears were down three games jo one but pulled the series out of the fire much to the amaze- luent of all concerned one explanation may be that it takes loin- teams a game or two to size up their opposition especially strange ice surface hut when they figure out their special jtyje of play the story is often reversed such lias certainly been i he case on many occasions this winter stolki-viui- bkcomint a spoutsmavs iakalilsk you sportsminded fans who think that stouffville is back- vird in the athletic field should take out a pencil and paper lind list the activities that are available to all ages and leagues which take advantage of the rink considerable time is set aside for public and figure skating during he even month period also ill the summer months wrestling enjoyed by many enthusiastic fans while dancing bingos and jthei forms of entertainment has its place let us now move inside where we find three ball clubs in action there is the jamous stouffville bed sox baseball squad the newly organized loftbail club and a champion girls team that walked off with the lionours last season stouffville has two types of bowling to offer ihe five pin at the arena howling centre and lawn bowling vhich is carried on throughout the summer months in the park jhe stouffville i ions club completed a fine job of bardtopping lie oiiceshanieful tennis courts and a tennis club will be formed ii i matter of weeks those of us who find the above named ports too robust call wander down to the lower section of the ark and lake up the friendly game of horseshoes indeed uouffville has and is blossoming out in the sporting world and kit n a little hard work on the part of every sports minded citizen his rapid growth will not be short lived spring am thk sportsman now spring is once again with us with it will come ever- mieasej activity in the outdoors sportsmen will head toward heir favourite likes and streams in search of the big one that id away campers will plan hikes and camping trips and icationists will plan another years outing these people will all have one thing in common they will making use of the natural resources of our province natural sources which are theirs by right this is as it should lie but le tragedy of the whole thing is that people must be persuaded o protect this common property every year we read of socalled sportsmen who are lined ir taking many times the legal limit every year we read of ampers who thoughtlessly destroy much valuable timber by iitling young trees for firewood tent poles rafts etc and too very year we lead of destructive forest fires caused by the areless flick of a lighted cigarette the hasty abandonment of ti improperly extinguished camp fire or by other careless acts this situation need not exist there is no reason why poi ismen true sportsmen should disobey the game laws legal inlts are not set to decrease outdoor pleasure rather they are t to increase and implement the pleasure of a day in ontarios utdoors legal limits today mean sufficient supplies for to- loitow if we are to adopt a selfish attitude and recklessly take le fish from our streams it is not difficult to foresee that the itttre would soon find us devoid of the inhabitants of our aters in the same way if campers rekiesiy destroy young tim er with no thought of the results of their actions much of this iluable natural resource would be lost the wealth represented y our forests would rapidly diminish and in the end the very eople who disobeyed the code of sportsmen would be the ones suffer they would soon find many areas closed to them leieby imposing limits upon their outdoor activities on the subject of forest fires we cannot speak too seriously o one benefits from a forest tire pores wealth i- our wealth chen we destroy our tall stately trees we are systematically educing the natural value of this great province lat year an educational campaign of great magnitude udeavoured to cany the mesage of caution to people eveiy- heie in the province special radio programmes magazine nicies newpaper stories and bulletins warned the people that nit ion was a necessity but when the final total was figured ver s5 of the forest tires were caused by human carelessness this year let us all make a special effort to be sportsmen i oery sense of ihe word it matters not how we derive our njoyment from th outdoors what matters isthat we as tizens owe it to ourselves to protect what is rightfully ours y o doing we win guarantee the preservation of the oppor- inity to enjoy many carefree holidays in this one of the most
