the tribune siousriue out- thursday apri 1953 huge grass fire gets out of control at ballantrae additional locals announce plans for world plowing competition victoria square tt a huge grass fire covering nearly fiftv acres was burning out of control on the bahan- trae sideroad in the early afternoon this wednesday stoulfville fire brigade who were out at the time attending another grass fire near the local arena were called to the whitchurch conflagration and were joined later by mt al bert brigade the fire started on the farm of mr harold jones and quick ly spread through the long grass to other neighboring fields the stouffville fire truck became bogged down in the mud and the volunteers had to use branches and axes in an eifort to hold the flames in cheek farmers in the area gathered at the scene and a tractor and plough were used to slow down the advancing fire with the aid of a tow- truck the stouffville engine was hauled out of the mud and the arrival of the mt al bert africa it elimin ates one of the greatest prob lems in world plowing finan cing of movements of compet ing plowmen to countries where the matches will beheld tlie first world plowin match organized by wcpo is to be in cobourg ont in con junction with the ontario -1- day match from oct 6 to 9ts the second world match will be held in eire next year mr carrol said that during their stay in canada this year plowmen competing in the big match will be guests of canad ian plowmen and imperial oil in future years imperial oi is to pay the travelling expenses ot canadian national plowing champions to world matches overseas the travelling expenses of competing plowmen from eur ope and north africa will be covered this year by compan ies operating in their home lands these companies will in years when the world match is held in their country act as joint hosts with national plowmen to the competitors from other countries imperial oil and the over seas companies will jointly sponsor a world championship plowing trophy to be known as the esso golden plow it will be emblematic of work supremacy in plowing mr carrol said the plan had been worked out at meetings last week between himself j d
