notes and comments wed and live longer when cynics scoff at marriage there are plenty of argu ments to use in refutation one is that married people live longer than do single ones statistics show that is true of this continent and it evidently is likewise true of others in japan a single man at 25 is unlikely to live beyond 49 but if a man maries at 25 he is likely to live until about 68 thats a lot of difference the old expression that it only seems longer isnt true either married men are happier in japan at least where the suicide rate for single men is much higher matrimony may not ensure perfect happiness but no other system ensures happiness in equal degree windsor star new year resolutions is it a fact or merely faulty observation that the custom of making new year resolutions has fallen into disuse people over forty and perhaps people even younger can remember a time when january 1 was a day for earnest decisions about selfimprovement but as 1953 began there was no evidence in sermons or newspaper articles or general conversation that anybody was thinking very seriously about turning over a new leaf on bygone new years days the seriousminded citizens young and old would form and perhaps announce to the assembled family an intention to write a letter once a week to friends or relations keep a diary read two good books a month drink no more or not before six oclock give up smoking attend church regularly save money take daily exercise or form some other new habit promising benefit to body or soul if people nowadays make such pious plans on january 1 they must do it in secret for nobody ever hears abut new year resolutions any more except as a joke one reason may be a lessening of the old fear of eternal punishment for the contented sinner another belief that has taken a beating in the last generation is the belief that human nature if not perfectible is at least improvable by effort the contemporary idea encouraged by some of the mental scientists is that bad behaviour is either societys fault or else a blameless personal misfortune like rheuma tism or fallen arches if that is so of course there is no point in making good resolutions at any time of the year utility commission facing important work stouffville public utility commission which met for the first time last week is facing a large and important job in town in the coming year or two we are referring especially to the work in the water department which in an expanding community such as this is of paramount importance chairman a e weldon pointed out in the first session the importance of having a proper survey taken of the entire system and at some early date having the system properly mapped something that has been long overdue the increasing population has brought greater demand for water and the commission should take steps to pre pare now for even greater demand in the future should the council proceed with a sewerage system the one reservoir which is the original reservoir and more than a half century old is virtually clone the brick work of which it is formed has been crumbling away for years so that today in places little of it remains even the cement work of the number one reservoir is in a bad state of repair last week again the pump which has become a necessity at the reservoirs due to the increased demand broke down previously the motors had played out but this trouble was taken care of with a spare motor always ready for- instant use should the occasion demand in this latest instance pumping operations must come to a stand still till repairs are affected as no spare pump is available the matter of purchasing additional land was also discussed by the commission land was bought some years ago to the north of the present property and this has been reforested and protects the water supply from any contaminating spring runoff from the north side however the south boundary is much too close to pasture land and more land should be acquired in this direction these and other problems are facing the new commis sion making their first year of office one of prime impor tance financial difficulty has plagued the local water system for many years with the small rates charged failing to bring in sufficient revenue to proceed with much in the way of capital expenditure to improve the system while this trouble was partially offset by a raise in rates last year the waterworks account is still not in too healthy a condition and debentures might have to be resorted to for any major work last years council instituted some improvements in completing line work in town and installing the chlorinat ing plant on the 9th con a major operation the people have expressed confidence in the members of the new- commission to handle this vital town service and are looking forward to seeing all the necessary steps taken to have our water system safeguarded and to keep pace with the growth of the community the old home town by stanley paw stop lookisks this afternoon tommy told his i mother eagerly all week he look- ed forward to this hour of craft training on fridays in the hobby room at school during the year he had designed and made a square teapot stand a lawn ornaj mental marker and a bird house at christmas he asked for a freti saw and he had been engrossed in making jigsaw puzzle he glued an attractive colored picture on to light wood and rew his own pattern for the pieces when his class discussed making toys for the sick childrens ward in the hospital tommy offered to make two puzzles one a picture of a girl with her doll and the other a ship picture for a boy the presents were all made by the scholars when they were completed and brought to school the teacher snowed them to the president of the home and school club who happened to he tommys mother she was surprised and delighted by the variety of well made gifts the boys and girls have got a great deal of satisfaction out of this project the teachers com mented i think part of its suc cess lays in the fact that it was a cooperative effort no pupil felt he had to heat another pupils work the presents were on display at the executive meeting of the home and school that week one of the members of the executive offered to donate a money prize for the gift which the teacher considered the most original and most carefully made present the teacher hesitated to speak for fear of offending the donor hut tom mys mother said it is very gen erous of you to offer a money prize but is it a good idea every child has taken part in this activity and has experienced real satisfaction i know tommy thinks joans stocking doll is just as well made as his puzzles will we spoil the spirit of cooperation by injecting the competitive idea of winning a first prize what is your reaction to this mothers question is she not on the right track have you not observed that children do just as good work in a cooperative as in a competitive effort if they are really convinced that it is worth while we do live in a competitive world when they leave school boys and girls are pitted against each other for jobs and for many prizes in life but in our homes are we going to place emphasis on joy in activity and the reward found in doing our best or are we continually spurring our children on to come first and beat the other fellow competition between brothers and sisters can provoke a lot of unnecessary hostility john may be brilliant in mathematics while figures are an awful trial to mary but reading bores john and un like mary the childrens division in the public library has no charm for him mary has a fine school record in literature and composition while john finds these are his weakest subjects the happiness of john and mary and their attitude to their school work are bound to bo colored by their parents attitude to their report cards surely each student can do his or her best work with out striving to better the others record in individual
