is the residence of mr and mrs magnus mowat main st v markham township will review building bylaws after a lengthy consultation with the building inspector ross nor ton markham township council last week agreed to meet shortly in special session to go over the townstiip building bylaws govern ing building and land use mr norton was called to appear before last weeks meeting concerning six stores which are being erected on yohge st building permits have been issued and septic tank permits for these buildings mr norton explained that before the stores can install sufficient tile bed for sanitary purposes it will be necessary for the owners to ac quire more land and this he stated they would have no difficulty do ing councillor lemasurier stated that there was a resolution on the books allowing the inspector to refuse a permit until the matter of totu enforcement of the bylaws bad come before council 1 asked for a bylaw not a res olution i cant enforce a resolu tion replied mr norton the inspector told council that all the bylaws had been complied with in connection with the new stores and the owners had been notified by the health unit that they would have to acquire more land for the installation of a pro per tile bed dont you think we better susi pend building until these stores get the necessary land for their tile beds suggested councillor lemasurier thats too drastic replied the inspector 1 dont think you would have had sufficient reason for withhold ing permits on registered lots such as these said mr norton he further added that the owner signs an aurora side road east of vandorf for marks men using 22 calibre rifles be cause of severe weather condi tions many were unable to attend but the scores obtained by some contestants prove that there are some good young marksmen in this vicinity in the ladies class mrs michael van nostrand and mrs e l lie- carron battled for first and second prizes mrs van nostrand winning with a score of 03 in the open class over eighteen years of age peter van nostrand won first place with a score of 97 points and neil van nostrand placed second with 95 points stuart wilson of aurora scored 77 points in the class for boys 14- 18 years of age in the junior class bobby hill ary eugene mccarron and billy richardson competed billy rich ardson obtained first place scoring 83 points and eugene mccarron second with 06 points the winners of first place in each class then shot it out for the grand prize which was won by stuart wilson the first prizes were baby brownie cameras a bill fold and a beautiful bone china cup and saucer the second prizes being athletic club giving away free trip to new york stouftville athletic club will come up with an innovation at their annual winter carnival this february the club is out sellin lucky draw tickets and the win ner will receive a free weekend trip to new york for two persons the carnival is a valentine affair and turk broda of the maple leaf organization has offer ed his services for the night in connection with a minor hockey display which is to be part of the program tickets on the free trip are on sale from any member of the athetlic club and at the office of the secretary the tribune stouff- ville purchase of school site is completed plans will be scutinized by department tentative approval has been received from the ontario municipal board to proceed with the erection of the new stouffville high school the tentative approval which is a customary procedure and has already been received for a similar school at markham allows the local high school board to complete the purchase of the school site ten acres on the lambert stouffer farm and the architect to draw up sketch plans these plans are then presented to the dept of education for scrutiny and possible modifications after which blue prints are proceeded with and tenders called for the construction shore moffat t local architects have already drawn the sketch plans and these will be presented for department appro val very shortly the local board is proceeding with all haste in order that full construction may be underway this coming summer and it is hoped that some savings may be attained should the same contractor obtain both the stouffville and markham jobs utility commission wellknown farmer to scrutinize new hydro rates new and slightly higher hydro rates are coming in stouffville they are recommended by the i ontario hydro commission under whose jurisdiction the local hydro utility department operates this friday evening stouff- villes newly elected utility com mission will meet for the first time and will scrutinize the pro posed new rates additional work was completed in this department this week and unfortunately caused a fivehour shutdown at the eastend local authorities were not informed of the extreme length of the shutoir and were powerless to give resi dents any relief maintenance workers were on ground from markham adding an additional heavy transformer at the corner of tenth st and main the local system is somewhat handicapped at this point since the high voltage line does not go any further east than tenth st nor does it go south expires suddenly waterman pens and a two pound box of chocolates and the grand prize was a larger model brownie camera this is the first venture the conservation club has made in organizing a target match and we believe that all who attended enjoyed themselves inspite of the bitter cold weather a hot fire of pine stumps did much to warm up numbed fingers and toes michael van nostrand acted as range officer and bill bentley and peter van nostrand as score keepers the club wishes to express its thanks to mr jim wilson of aurora who generously provided the ammunition for the match jacob l grove lived 81 years on same farm born on the farm at lot 32 con 7 markham 81 years ago jacob l grove passed away there quietly on monday dec 29th despite his long active life he had beenenjoy- ing good health and only on the day of his passing did he speak of a slight discomfort he went about his morning chores and travelled to town in the morning after the noon meal mr grove laid down for a short rest and it was here that he passed away while he gave up active farming some twenty years ago he had continued to work along with his sons at every opportunity fifty- five years ago this coming febru ary he married francos diller of three christmas babies arrive at the brierbush hospital on dec 25 deatii came to david e pugh wellknown whitchurch township farmer with shocking suddenness on christmas day he had just completed enjoying some christ mas parcels and had gone upstairs when lie expired suddenly from a severe heart attack mr pugh although in his 7sth year had always enjoyed comparatively good health j born in the sunderland district 1 the late david pugh carried on the i trade of a mason for a time later turning to farming in which he engaged near goodwood and for the last thirty years at lot 2 con g whitchurch while the deceased was always a keen observer of the local political scene he never engaged in politics himself and remained strictly with his farm business mr pugh attended the baptist church his wife the former minnie flumerfelt predeceased him a year and a half ago surviving is one son jrlarry on the home piace and a grandson john there are three brothers william of toronto ad tri of cobourg and arthur of barrie also a sister mrs bert sharpe of toronto the funeral on saturday dec 27th was conducted by rev caleb harris of toronto and an old friend of mr pugh he was assisted by rev harold branton pallbearers were messrs arthur paisley edgerton clubine harry clendening clifford gordon glenn ratclifr and ross ratclifi inter ment was made in uxbridge cemetery cedar grove who survives him the late jacob grove was a member of the old order menno- nite church and a sincere christ ian gentleman singing occupied an important place in his life and he conducted singing classes in his younger years deceased was a son of the late jacob b grove and mary lehman of ringwood besides his wife deceased is survived by five sons ezra john levi aaron and thomas an only brother levi of altona died six teen years ago and a sister annie mrs christian wideman of almira died in early married life another sister ada died in infancy the funeral on friday jan 2nd will be conducted with service at 10 am at the home and 1030 at the wideman church ministers taking part will be cecil reesor fred nighswandcr fioyd sehmuc- ker and abram smith the pall bearers will be six grandsons paul jacob joseph david albert and ivan grove interment will be made in the wideman cemetery mr and mrs c armstrong spent christmas with mr and mrs russell nendick at uxbridge saw cjaus was ertainly a bus man around the brier- hospital stouffville this christmas with the arrival of no less than three bibies on christmas and photos by cadleux son stouffville a daughter wn born to mrs lrne cook of stouffville on christmas- eve mrs j lewis spent the christ mas holiday with mr and mrs dalton lewis in toronto on the weekend dalton his wife and family left on a motor trip to florida mrs archie forfar has joined the staff of the canadian bank of commerce stouffville spofford and co will be closed j one day only friday jan 2nd for annual stocktaking
