stouffville famous in his day as a muchsought lacrosse player reeve wheeler had a high fence around his orchard for the boys that was bad in the early summer w b san ders frequently came calling on friends on horseback at 130 am w b was a great friend of uncle john richardson reeve of scar- boro and warden of york county they both were strong grits r j daley had vivid visions of stouffvilles future greatness and possibilities lie did much to start the town on the road to its present status in my boyhood days i once misjudged him my mother wanted to take me into his store to buy a pair of boots 1 objected on the grounds that he rj was a great fighter for he had a sign up the street saying that he could boot any man in town hiram johnson kept the bake shop he had three beautiful daughters during high school days rich ard underbill frequently appeared before his store prepared to give sound advice to passing students his philosophy was he the best and give your best in figure was the lowest in history this should indicate a contin ued high price for growers said r e goodin associate director crops weeds and seed branch ontario department of agriculture the acreage would have been higher but many professional growers sold their seed for table stock acreage in this immediate local ity of ballantrae and goodwood is about the same he further predicted an artificial scarcity in ontario until the late potatoes came onto the market about 75 per cent of new potato crop of essex and kent counties had gone to market and been eaten up mi goodin said that 50 years ago slooo acres were grown in the province he thought produc tion had dropped in recent years because growers didnt get enough for them but with the sharp de crease in production they had recently been priced off many tables another reason people were eating fewer potatoes although they were one of the best and cheapest foods was that growers were putting a poor quality pro duct on the market in a check made in three cities last winter we found 85 per cent of ontario potatoes under canada xo 1 grade how can you expect housewives to pay you 5 and so a bag for inferior quality product acreages in the exporting prov inces of new brunswick and prince- edward island were up about 15 per cent over last year there should be a fairly ample suppiy of potatoes when these spuds reached local markets
