naturalists club the author of the publication tells apout it in his own words in january bill smith and i stepped oil the road into the south ern corner of the black alder wood in pickering we were look ing for a winter wren and a white- throat seen there during our christmas census our attention however was soon rivetted upon other birds shortly alter entering the trees we noticed a fresh track winding through the wood some one had been here not long before what for that question was soon answered when 1 found myself all at once standing over the body of a longeared owl picking it up i saw its breast bespotted with fresh blood yet uncongealed the sight of this beautiful and useful bird foolishly slaughtered and left on the snow sent a hpt surge of anger through me bat more was to come circling through the wood in to find their home occupied butu tl of the hunter bill and 1 the occupants were welcome be- came to the edge of the trees then ing mr and mrs francis willson mr and mrs d the return trip hence 1 was alone as i reentered the trees midway along the north ern side of the wood almost al once i stayed in my steps by tiie siglit of a whole group of long- eared owls happily all alive and all gazing at me intently from the depths of a cedar tree ear tufts erect every eye centred upon me in nervous alarm usually long- eared owls are quiet tame and approachable but not today some small movement on my part sent the whole flock of eight into sud den eruption the cedar tree liter ally exploded owls brown shapes hurtled away from me on the road to look jack was in luck as most of the owls glided silently over the road to seek refuge amongst the cedar trees on the other side was hurrying to the road to find out where they had gone when as i came within talking distance of jack i once more found myself looking down upon the soft brown body of a longeared owl by this time bill had rushed up and directed by jack gone on into the cedars to the east here he roused again two of the owls but sad to relate he found the third longear dead upon snow reach to enforce warble fly act at the latest meeting of reach township council a large delega tion of
