arthur s holden of markham the wedding will take place on saturday october 21st in markham united church visits ohio farms by claude brillinger manager of stouffville coop on sunday morning october 1st a group of 24 men and 3 ladies left london ontario for a tour through the state of ohio one of the most progressive states in the usa the group was composed of coop directors managers and the vice president of the united cooperatives of- ontario in toronto for four lovely days with temp eratures ranging in the sos we vlsited farms local and central coops fertilizer plants dairies creameries insurance cos and radio stations the state of ohio from a view point of a cooperator is the essence of perfection the farm bureau in the states is the same as our own cooperatives in ontario except they are in many more lields of merchandise and more extensive plants for instance the farm bureau insurance co is the 3rd largest in the states and is only covering 12 states they have just completed building a new five million dollar building to house their activities and are growing so rapidly that another huge buildin will lie started in 1951 the farms in ohio are almost entirely growing cash crops such as wheat soyabeans and corn this according to louis bromfield of malabar farms which we visited is depleting the soil to such an extent that unless soil conser vation is practiced soon the top soil will be lost in another ten years on malabar farms by careful building up the soil with legumes over a period of 5 years the unbelievable growth is evident on 600 acres of the finest crops of alfalfa i have ever seen the roots go down in the ground for a depth of 20 feet whicji was proven to us at the time of our visit one coop fertilizer plant which we visited of which there are four in the state had a capacity of 400 tons per day and were working to the limit in order to supply all the fertilizer for wheat seeding which was just beginning on october 1st the farmers in ohio have one great advantage over our farmers in this district and that is they have no milk quotas from the dairies of if they have do not have any second grade or any surplus milk the coop has set up a dairy creamery and powdered milk plant which takes all the surplus milk off the market for powdered milk and also acts as a distributing agent even to large corporations such as bordens this seems to work beautifully for the farmer and he is not discriminated against to the degree he feels he is here in ontario the trip covered a distance of some 1200 miles and took four days to complete i felt that we can learn a great deal from our amer ican friends and also they can learn many things more conser vative in nature from us peaches mr and mrs warren morris of the 7th line celebrated their silver
