and has been enjoy ing a few holidays in toronto dur ing the past week mr and mrs john badgerow and son have been enjoying holidays during the past week miss joan middleton has become the junior member of the staff of claremont bank of commerce mr blair evans has taken a position with chas cooper hard ware business mr and mrs koy ward spent the weekend at their cottage mrs g mclntyre has returned home after spending a week in ottawa at the home of her brother mr and mrs james milen called on mr james rumney on sunday last mr rumney has been con fined to his home the last few weeks owing to illness we wish him a speedy recovery the baptist church picnic will be held on saturday afternoon of this week at ratclilfs park buses will leave the church grounds at 1245 for all requiring transporta tion everyone bring lunch baskets and expect a good time mrs d pugh entertained a group of seven ladies last tuesday to a social time and supper at her home which was greatly enjoyed by all present mrs john nichol and son lome of toronto visited with miss margaret graham over the week end the baptist circle will meet on tuesday july 25th at the home of mrs coates at 230 oclock mrs c gosticks group will be in charge of the program on india all mem bers please attend the regular wa meeting will be held on thursday july 27th at 3 oclock in the sunday school room commencing at 530 pm the goodfellowship class will serve the usual supper to which every one is invited there will be a slight increase in price as it has been found unprofitable to serve at such a low figure such home of mr and mrs jesse warden on saturday even ing mr weaver gave as his topic war or peace which was very interesting to hear on saturday evening july 22 a fireside will again be held with another cemetery board the price of plots in the claremont burying ground has jumped from 50 to 100 these prices include perpetual care it is understood that the size of plots has been increased from 16xlg to 16x18 former local sectionman dead the funeral of the late herb hurtibese former section foreman of cnr at claremont was held on saturday morning july 15th at oshawa from the home of a daugh ter with whom he had been living for the past four years with mrs hurtibese mr hurtibese was afflicted with a paralytic stroke from which he did not recover and about three months ago had a leg removed the hurtibese family resided near the local cpr station until about four years ago when they moved to oshawa left to mourn his loss are his wife and four daughters a number of friends from clare mont attended the funeral on sat urday pickering will license pinball machines at a special meeting of picker ing council held last week authorization was given to license pinball machines operating with in the municipality the fee will be 50 for the first machine and 25 for each succeeding one during world war ii us pennies were made largely from shell cases with only a small amount of virgin copper year on sunday july lgth at geneva park the day was ideal for such a gathering friends were present from toronto mimico oshawa port perry ajax brougham markham and green river many of them having not a memorial signed by laura secord canadian heroine during the war of 1812 who warned the british of the impending american attack which resulted in the capture of american forces at beaver dams ontario june 1813 the instrument dated 25th of february 1820 executed in the district of upper canada conveys 172 acres of land in the township of uxbridge described as lot 37 7th concession to one george moffat for the sum of 64 pounds 10 shillings the land had been given to laura secord by the crown presumably in recognition of the heroic service she had rendered to the government and the canadian people the land had been patent ed to laura secord march 31 1807 which is 143 years ago the instru ment of the sale was drawn on august 16 1819 and registered in york 1820 at that time of course ontario county was not in exist ence the division of york to create ontario county coming several years later the instrument is in laura secords handwriting and the penmanship is very excellent and clear it has been well pre served and will continue to be it is a very definite link between the past and the present an examination of the books at the registry office reveals the fact that the land sold by laura secord has been divided up and has differ ent owners one firm bought 86 acres of it and it has been sold in different parcels it is said to be fairly good pasture land
