pickering township council is scheduled for next thursday dec 29th the openair rink at the local school which is being provided this winter by the local business mens association was completed this week and only awaits a smile from the weatherman for a good sheet of ice claremont is expected to put a bushleague hockey team into the field this winter and not a juvenile team as was planned earlier we have been asked by the secretary of the local school board to announce the annual ratepayers meeting for the section next wed nesday dec 28th at 10 am in the forenoon ratepayers should be interested in the business of their school and are asked to attend next wednesday morning at the school miss daisy ryall who up until a short time ago operated a gift store in the village has accepted a position at st johns convalescent home near newtonbrook the baptist womans circle will be held on tuesday dec 27th at 230 oclock at the home of mrs binstead miss viola forsythes group is in- charge of the program the christmas tree and party in connection with the baptist sun day school will be held this friday evening in the baptist church everyone come and enjoy the annual church event we are glad to hear that the infant daughter of mr and mrs alex robertson which was taken to the general hospital for treat ment when the mother returned from the brierbush hospital recently is safely at home mr and mrs howard pugh and family have moved from their former home at the north end of our village during the past month to another district the house is up for either sale or to rent the united church sunday school christmas tree and enter tainment will be held on friday evening of this week commencing at 8 oclock in the church the community is invited the early morning fog and icy roads were responsible for mr mate andersons miik truck skidd ing into the ditch east of the village on sunday morning mr anderson who was seated beside the driver mr timbers of locust hill received an arm injury but fortunately no bones were broken twentythree boxes of candy and a bag of oranges were contributed by members of the institute for the shutins christmas cheer at last thursdays meeting mrs mel- vin johnson completed her report of the annual central area insti tute convention held in toronto and rev h lackey gave a very fine christmas message the group sang a number of christmas carols accompanied by mrs g gregg who also contributed a beautiful piano solo a social halfhour at which sandwiches cookies candy and tea were served was enjoyed by all there were about forty present including children the community enjoyed hearing three new beautiful music records played 6ver the chimes memorial system last sunday the contribu tion of miss bessie graham of our village to the church and for which we are very grateful mr and mrs david tran and son laurie visited in kingston with mr and mrs gordon over land recently mrs overland david and craig returned with her parents and will spend a few days here visiting in the community mr morris binstead recently contributed a number of records to the goodfellowship class which are being used on the memorial chimes system and for which he and the family have received the gratitude of the church through the above class the united church board has been making an extensive visita tion to the adherents and members during the past few weeks it may be possible that some new comers have been overlooked in which case kindly let some member know or plan and attend some of the churchs services and got acquainted everyorte cordially welcomed by pastor and others present miss janet scott is now able to have her arm out of a cast since sustaining a break several weeks ago in a fall downstairs mike williamson wellknown local citizen tells us that he and mrs williamson are expecting the entire family home for christmas including gilbert who has been playing hockey near kingston since his recent return from the scottish league stores open three nights claremont merchants have an nounced that their places of busi ness will be open for your con venience for the last three even ings this week thursday friday and saturday holidays will be observed next monday and tuesdav dec 26th and 27th santa did himself proud in claremont saturday with nearly a dozen lovely floats an orchestra clowns and comic men santa claus really turned on all his charm for the crowd estimated at more than a thousand who swarmed the clare mont business section on saturday afternoon the parade put on by the claremont businessmens asspciation was the first ever tried in the local village but its success will certainly warrant a return visit from st nick next christmas the floats some of them on quite a large scale were supplied by the sarco co chas cooper bob madill bob mcleod frank barclay enid benson and the local fire brigade the large sarco co float even sported a full orchestra to add christmas music to the festivities while enid ben son and her pony also got a big hand approximately four hundred kiddies made their way up to santas throne in the village square to receive their gift the affair was handled under the chairmanship of bill browning local meat market proprietor stores were crowded all during the afternoon and the venture proved itself a prosperous one in every respect pickering assessor is wentworth supervisor the second ontario county asses sor to become a county assessor elsewhere in the province this month is james m blackwell pickering township who has been engaged to supervise the new wentworth county assessment system ralph wilson of whitby recent ly went to welland county recognized as a man of out standing ability and experience in his field mr blackwell is 37 years of age in his new position he will take on the formidable task of establishing and consolidating an equalized assessment system for wentworth county minor munici palities for the past three years a private evaluator has been employed to lay the groundwork for the task mr blackwell has now to carry out last week when his official resignation was received both county and township officials paid warm tribute to the fine type of job mr blackwell has been doing born in muskoka lie came to live in torontefor some ten years and there gained experience in this line of work for five years he was employed with imperial oil limited then during the war was a safety inspector with defence industries limited at ajax mr and mrs blackwell have been living west of pickering village they have one the weekend with mr and mrs frank grey of agincourt and attended the christening service of her granddaughter barclay jane grey remember the special holiday dance being held in the com munity hall here on monday night dec 26th under the sponsorship of the claremont bowling club brougham brougham lodge ioof 155 held their regular meeting on dec 15 with a good attendance one very outstanding feature of this lodge is that its membership consists of three generations of one family namely mr wm ellicott who recently received his twenty- five jewel his son mr manson ellicott and his grandson mr ray ellicott the lodge is planning for a special meeting on dec 29th when the unitiary degree will be put on the wms of st johns united church held their monthly meet ing on thursday dec 15 with a good attendance at the home of mrs robt malcolm the president mrs m ellicott was in charge of the worship service mrs t nor ton read the christmas story mrs wm gray program convener and her group mrs randel ellicott mrs h barclay and mrs w c willson gave the christmas pro gram during the business period mrs norton was appointed as presbyterial representative a letter of appreciation was read from mr wm westney express ing his thanks to the ladies who helped with the wardens banquet one of its oldest members mrs malcolm sr who is 93 years old was present at this meeting and able to enjoy it the hostesses served a very dainty lunch the many friends of mrs w ai knox are glad to know that she is feeling somewhat better after be ing confined to her bed for several days last week mrs gordon duncan and little carol returned to their home in markham last week after stay ing a few weeks with her parents mr and mrs m harlock mr and mrs thos anderson of toronto visited mr and mrs ken neth pascoe on sunday mr and mrs h philp of tor onto called on mr and mrs m hamilton on sunday mrs e woodward entertained friends from oshawa on sunday mrs mctaggart and mr kenney of toronto visited with mr and mrs al harvey and mrs harvey sr on sunday mr and mrs d l mairs called on mr and mrs f ham of claremont on sunday evening keep in mind the sunday school concert to be held on friday even ing dec 23 brougham lodge ioof no 155 were at markham on dec 12 when they put on the initiatory degree a very pleasant evening was held in the school on friday last when the pupils gave their christ mas entertainment which was enjoyed by all we understand they have agreed to repeat several of the numbers at the sunday school concert to be given this brougham farm sold by markham agent of ernest ridout company the sixtyacre farm of mr wal ter dandie of brougham has been sold to mr w a scott of the photographic survey co ocon nor drive the deal was com pleted last weekend by mr thos j wignall of the ernest ridout real estate co the price was not disclosed though we understand it was sold well mr scott who resides in tor onto takes possession april 1st next year and plans to take up residence there at that time the farm is located just off no 7 high way right south of the country grill the soil is of the best with nine acres of bushland and lots of water the dwelling has modern conveniences to the very last degree atha mr alex robertson attended the funeral of a brotherinlaw in barrie on wednesday mr and mrs powell and family attended the supper and christmas entertainment of the anglican church stouffville held in the high school on friday evening a capacity crowd enjoyed the christmas concert held in atha school on friday evening the play put on by the young people here was enjoyed by all mrs a draper fred draper and mr and mrs gren draper called at st michaels hospital on sunday to see mr a draper who is expected home this week several from here attended the claremont santa claus parade on saturday afternoon mrs fred draper and daughters visited her sister mrs murray dunkeld on sunday sox ties shirts belts gloves slippers scarves fleecelined boots for in the sick list including mrsm hamilton mr wm dunn and mr h liscombe are all much improved in health mr and mrs m ellicott and billy had tea with mr and mrs ross knox mr and mrs d ritchie also miss louise ritchie all of toronto visited over the weekend with their mother mrs b ritchie the womens institute held their last meeting of 1949 in the township hall on dec 13th mrs f cassie president was in the chair a goodly number of gifts were brought by the members to be sent to the childrens shelter for christmas mrs b harvey delegate to the central ontario area womens institute forty- seventh convention at the royal york- hotel toronto gave a very interesting report of the proceed ings including some amusing incidents as president of the red cross mrs harvey also reminded members of the drive for funds coming in march 1950 mrs h barclay is now representative for the institute to the community club and mrs lloyd johnston is now the blue cross secretary mrs matthews received a christ mas card and letter from mrs bone a devonshire wi corres pondent which contained greet ings to members christmas carols were sung at the close of the meeting and a tasty lunch was served by the hostesses mrs h barclay mrs geo gray mrs j mitchell mrs a gray and mrs geo duncan the hockey team played their first league game of the season last thursday night at markham rink against hogarths imperials from west hill resulting in a score of 7 to 1 in favor of hogarth the west hill team has had consider able more practise and is in better condition than brougham the league this year is playing under the ontario rural hockey association rules and the winners or at least the team getting the most points between markham and hogarths will carry on in the senior playoffs for the champion ship of the province of ontario and the team with the most points between brougham cherrywood dunbarton and pickering will carry on in the intermediate championship playoffs this is a much higher class of hockey this year and should be faster to watch so come out and cheer the boys to victory our community club will hold their weekly dances as usual on the 24th and 31st of dec but each of these nights will have some thing special to offer saturday dec 24th santa claus will be there to surprise us with admission price the same as usual but on saturday dec 31st it will be a special new year dance with special prices etc and the admis sion to this dance will be s200 per couple and dress optional the brougham bus will be going to all the hockey games in which brougham is participating provid ing at least 20 passengers wish to go and claremont will possibly give us at least half of this number as they did last week this has been a disappointing year for rinks that have no artificial ice in dundalk a sheet of ice has been made twice only to be all melted by the mild weather that followed the cold snaps one wonders what would have happ- free cars i yes sir three free cars and we when the pony truck of a freight locomotive jumped the tracks near cherry- wood passengers on the torontobound passenger trains who were bound for the queen city detrained there but those who were destined j for points beyond toronto remain ed on the trains the passengers made the remainder of their trip in chartered buses the accident at cherrywood which occurred about 4 am caused little
