sunday afteilioon proceeded from l e oneills chapel in stouffviue to the cemetery here for burial mr van zant was in his 7gth year and suffered from cancer he was a son of ludwig vanzant and his wife martha lehman william was a stationary engineer and a steady worker he lived in the west end of stouffviue but went to toronto nine years ago where he lived until last may when he went to oak ridges yonge st where his son and one daughter reside twice married he is sur vived by his second wife and by four of a family to his first mar riage and two to his second mar riage they are cora mrs bert respected by a wide number of friends here now we have found smithy last week the radio reported sid schmidt of stouffviue was over hauled by an unknown person in toronto and we were quick to report that it wasnt our mr sid schmidt of the stanley theatre however since last press day we have found the right smithy he is sidney smith of dunville who is employed on the 6th concession of whitchurch by mr neil weir smith was in toronto met up with a young lad who appeared in need of a meal he was hungry and smith fed him and in gratitude the young lad offered to conduct smith to the street car line he was trying to locate enroute to the supposed car line and in a quiet part of the street around the allan gardens four men suddenly appeared from nowhere grabbed smith and proceeded to shake him up smith was battered unconsci ous robbed of 50 and was sent to hopital after police arrived his youthful conductor escaped that unexpectedly went over part of his shouweig and g while at wojh 1 m leaf d r ortunately the burns were not deep and no ill effects will be left however a burn is a terribly irritating painful injury motorists waste many thousands of dollars paying fines for speed ing to say nothing about those who become involved in accidents with endless cost to pocket book and health but they never learn to keep within speed limits it seems in newmarket court last week 117 were charged under the highways traffic act by york county police whom the nevymarket era states are cracking down on speeders most of the offenders were charged while travelling over yonge street way visits brothers and sisters first in eighteen years mrs reg mckay who with her husband occupies part of mr and mrs william birketts residence on main street west has returned from a ten weeks holiday to her native england naturally she was elated with the trip and while delighted to visit the home folk for the first time in 18 years mrs mckay has no desire to become a permanent resident of the british isles she toured england ireland scotland and visited paris con trary to what many people think food is fairly plentiful the real trouble is the terrible lack of variety for instance there will be ample supply of oranges for a period then they will pass off the market entirely same can be said for bananas and other fruits reason for- this is that when a cargo of one kind of fruit reaches them that will be all to come for a year mrs mckay enjoyed visiting her two brothers and two sisters in england whom she had not seen for a goodly number of years the trip was made both ways by flying on the return journey mrs mckay left the flying field in scotland and made montreal but had a stop in iceland for a short time it was learned after reaching montreal that their ship had circled the land ing field in iceland for two hours before it could land owing to a storm in that region passengers were not aware of this fact how ever and mrs mckay hadnt taken notice of the storm in the night hour mr and mrs bud vanzant of oak ridges were visitors in stouff viue on thursday bud vansant is a son of the late william vanzant formerly of stouftvule q w employed at one time with proprietors in town when mr glen ratcliff met with car trouble in toronto last friday it seems that the hub cap from a car pro ceeding ahead of him came off struck another car passing in the opposite direction and then bounc ing up into the air to come down on mr ratcliffs new desota that is scarcely broken in in fact it will never get accustomed to such an attack the accident could have had serious results since the hub cap came down on top of the sun visor which saved the windshield had their been no sun visor the cap would have crashed right into mr ratcliffs face as it is the sun visor can be repaired at much less expense than installing new glass or perhaps suffer severe injuries to thedriver russia the land of world revolution and the coming war red flag rules asia and one or two awkward situations have arisen where residents in stouffviue failed to obtain a build ing permit before adding a wood shed hen house or garage to their property it is always necessary to consult the building inspector be fore adding additions to buildings the law provides that a permit shall be issued for each and every job so do not proceed to build without a permit a wave of rumors concerning bloody toronto has been circul ating in town for some days it was said that over a dozen provincial police cruisers invaded main st last week on a tipoff that one of the wanted slayers was in this vicinity a local truck driver is said to have picked up a hitchhiker who was minus his shoes another story had it that a wellknown unionville lady had discovered a stranger seated on one of her lawn chairs in the wee small hours and that he had hustled away into the night when she appeared some friendly folks at agincourt gave lunch to a nervous stranger who came begging and he took to his heels through the fields immediate ly the meal was finished provincial squad cars landed on the scene shortly after but found no trace such were the street corner tales in stouffviue during the
