games at richmond hill were on the ice just before stouffville markham had an intermediate squad out for practice thursday night if markham comes through with a team it looks like a big season for the box office and the competition should pack some real hockey fever for district fans there are no more reports of junior hockey coming out of markham although a w lawton did give this newspaper a report that there would be a markham junior entry despite markham press reports to the contrary j popular old shepperton steals dufferin thunder i too often in sport the champion is forgotten as soon as he loses his spot on the top of the ladder per haps however in horse racing more than any other sport the champion is not forgotten so readily thats why on saturday at dufferin park it was the 40th anniversary of the little halfmile ova a onetime champion like shepperton the gormley horse owned by mr fred shelke was not forgotten the nicest thing our eyes have seen in some time was when old shep streaked down the short home stretch at dufferin took a picture decision over cadency and then slowly sauntered back to be unsaddled said an onlooker the customers close to 14000 were there waited for him to come back many didnt wager on him in fact wagered against him but the thrill of seeing the onetime cham pion make a challenge in the stretch slowly move up on cadency and then beat the mare stirred memories of the great days when shepperton mowed down his opposi tion the cream of the crop regularly and so when he returned satur day that huge crowd gave him a great cheer whats more he still looks like a champion though his legs arent what they used to be but he was back in familiar circles the winners circle he knew it he acted like it and the fans loved every bit of it or 30 million cwt the original agreement to ship 195 million cwt of bacon the dollar figures quoted above make aliowance for these changes j until there have been further discussions no one here will ven ture a guess as to where the uk dollar expenditure for these three foods will fall in 1949 apparently the british would like to get out of their canadian com mitment for fresh eggs as soon as the present contract expires this would be a tremendous blow for thousands of canadian eggraisers many of whom are veterans with their entire gratuity invested in the business hope is held there that some plan will be worked out to bring about a reduction in uk egg purchases considerably more slowly the bacon contract terminates dec 31 but it is believed the british are prepared to continue canadian purchases at something approaching present levels until midsummer 1919 from then on and oi a timetable corresjwnding to eca appropriations the drastic cutbacks would occur here again negotiation will take place lhtween now and the year end with a view to easing the pro jected cutback the british are apparently eager to take all the cheese that canada can supply mould take more if they could get it tracts next year blow to bacon and egg producers ottawa expected to buy most of flaxseed for canadian farmers taxpayers and industries there were many important developments this week on the food front says the financial post whats ahead for bacon and eg producers in 19 19 the united kingdom is planning drastic cuts in purchases from canada next year thats bad news only hope is that the contracts will be allowed to taper off not ended sharply here were other developments western grain men are asking an investigation into the losses incurr ed by western farmers following sales of canadian wheat at less than world prices eca rules on us flour and wheat sales are hampering canadian flour exports this news comes on top of the breakdown of maple leaf mill ing cos deal with italy ottawa is holding the bag for the bulk of the 10 million bushel flax seed crop with flax declared sur plus in us the canadian price is at the 1 floor and still not selling as domestic users for linseed oil etc await developments canadian farm products directly affected by the present uk plan are bacon and eggs the british are said to want to get out of their jreshegg contract with canada entirely they want to slash their bacon purchases to a figure very substantially below the wartime level or even below the previous figure if this plan is followed it would mean that the freshegg contract would not be renewed when it expires on jan 31 next it would mean that bacon contracts for 1919 would be made at sharply reduced figures with a further tapering off in the future as the british seek to close their dollar exchange deficit by 1952 following representations made by canadian negotiators at the cripps conference this very critical prospect for the canadian bacon and egg producers is now under review it is one of the matters at the head of the list for discussion by the special continuing canadauk committee whose personnel was announced last week hope to taper off no one here will hazard an opinion as to what changes in the british proposals may be made the hope is that out of subsequent discussions a way can be found to taper off these contracts more gently than was indicated at the time cripps was here- the reference last week by sir andrew jones came after he had told the internationa plowing match at lindsay that 579 of all uk food imports in the first half of 19is had come from canada he cited other percentages from a recent report by w b gornall agriculturalcommercial secretary for canada in london said sir andrew according to these figures 827r of the wheat and flour imported by great britain during the first six months of this year was obtained from canada as well as 78 of the cheese 75 of the bacon o of the eggs that there may be some changes in the picture by the end of the year must i think be anticipated but these changes may not be so marked as those which through force of circumstances may take place in 1949 present expectation is that bri tain will spend in canada this year about 40 millions for eggs s0 millions for bacon and 10 millions for cheese canada is considerably short in the amount of cheese she had undertaken to supply she will probably fall short in eggs against this we hope to exceed by 25 million margaret obrien robert preston danny thomas george kakin murphy booth edward butch arnold jenkins
