on him in the reciprocity election of 1911 and the hometown boy had always felt the hurt deeply too deeply perhaps because in 1919 when he chose to stand as a candidate in prince pei and was afforded an acclamation there the people of kitchener and north waterloo in their turn felt that king had deliberately snubbed them but time had healed these old wounds and when the prime min ister arrived in kitchener on that sunny september day in 1917 the slights and misunderstandings of the past if not entirely forgotten were most certainly completely for given king was just another old berlin bay who had made good and who was now coming back to renew old acquaintances and one and all irrespective of their political leanings the townspeople turned out to give him a royal welcome king lost no time in visitin woodside the fine old 10room grey brick home in which he had spent the most important years of his youth and which in its heyday was one of the show places of the town and district he found it greatly altered for it had fallen upon evil days during the depres sion a number of relief families had been crowded into it over the years neglect and vandalism had left their mark the place was fall ing slowly but surely into decay when king announced his inten tion of paying a visit to kitchener interested parties went out to woodside they found neariy every window in the house broken hurriedly they made what repairs they could the sight of the old house stand ing there in the middle of the little wood so desolate and down at heel must have brought a sudden pang of loneliness and regret to the heart of the homecoming prime minister in vain he must have sought to picture it as it had once looked with its wide sweeping lawns its carefully tended flower beds its great welcoming windows and ivy covered walls like the boy who had once romped with his brother and sisters playing hideandseek in the tangle of the wood the house too had grown old the venerableness of time now marked them both mtv audley miss joblin of port perry is visiting with her sister mrs henry westney mrs w cox is recovering from her recent accident whereby she suffered a fractured ankle her husband wedding in the greenwood the community is giving a church on the 29th last the best nuptial shower to miss mildred wishes of the community go with brown at the home of her parents her whatever were the prime minis ters thoughts as he stood there with a few of his old friends about him contemplating the crazy handi work of time tie was soon to under go one of the most pleasant and moving experiences of his life an experience which was to sweep away as with a single stroke the dust and litter of the years and which was to invest the old house with some of the glory of its happier days out of the house and up the path towards king came a little fair- haired blueeyed girl sixyearoid marilyn kilbasco the daughter of the polish couple who for nine years had occupied part of the first floor of the house and who now called it home she was dressed in her sunday best and a bright ribbon tied her hair in one tiny hand she held a single flower it was for the prime minister and in carefully rehearsed phrases she explained that she had come to welcome him to wood- side as she stood on her toes to place the flower in his buttonhole king leaned down and returned the childs infectious smile then mari lyn kissed him the sun shone more brightly then the woods seemed filled with song and the light and the music filled the rooms of the old house and made it gay and young wood- ide was woodside once again king had a wonderful time from then on he strolled all over the old estate asked rosycheeked mrs kilbasco to show him the old spring sat down in the kilbasco living room which had once been his fathers library picked his way up the creaking stairway to the room in which he had slept as a boy he poked an inquiring head out the window and wanted to know where stood the tree he had remembered as a boy then he wandered into his brothers bed room he was pleased to find that the original floors of the old house were standing up little by little memories came flooding back he recalled that he had spent the most important nine years of hu youth at woodside his eighth to his seventeenth year it brings mixed joy and sorrow he remarked theyll have to move
