and whitby town de bated the propoed high school area for that district but could reach no decision question of costs was not known which would naturally increase when transportation was added to present school mainten ance charges if pickering whitby and whitby township formed an area there would be an assessment of over s7000000 and while this area would be substantial as one unit it is being serviced today by various schools would the closing down of some and enlarging of others reduce or increase costs the dept of education do not hold out lower costs by reason of larger areas but they claim better educational services would result various representatives of the different areas and bodies were allowed to address the meeting and air their views in this somewhat controversial subject william murkar of pickering told the gathering that he was a com parative newcomer to such discus sions and that he did not know a great deal about the proposed plan however he said that it would appear as though the proposed change is much more serious now than it would have been 25 years ago mr murkar said that recently he had been told that the days of the continuation schools were num bered and that he was extremely sorry to hear this because under the present system many rural pupils received a twoyear second ary school education who would not normally do so if they were forced to go any distance to a high school he said that lie was assured that the ratepayers of school district no 1 west were behind the con tinuation school and that he would not like to take the responsibility of closing the continuation school is would appear to be the only solution if a now and enlarged dis trict was formed mr croxall a representative of the brooklin continuation school also declared that he would not be in favor of any definite move in a matter like this until the ratepayers of the area had been advised of the plan possibly in an open meeting thomas hammond of the clare- rriont continuation school board concurred with the two previous speakers by saying that he would not like to take the resonsibility of signing away hie claremont school without the sanction of the rate payers of the area francis j mclntyre chairman of the whitby school board and an exofficio member of the special committee told the meeting that the proposal was one that required a great deal of thought on the part of members of the bodies from the different municipalities he said that he was sure in his own mind that the proposals had a great deal of merit in them in many ways and that it would seem that if such action was taken it would surely mean the closing eventually of all continuation schools attention dairy farmers before selling your surplus dairy stock this fall give
