all the way from st john quebec in bales and weighed 19 tons it is believed to be the first car lot of shavings ever shipped into this station however the new industry of brome lake ducks makes such material in large quan tity necessary only about 100 feet of the new 400 foot long building being constructed on the farm is completed but the contractors are expected to rush the work immed- ately especially since thousands of young ducklings now hatching are about ready for the new quarters easter choral festival and sunday services draw largo attendance despite rather inclement weather the annual easter choral festival given by the choir of the stouffvule united church drew a large attend ance on good friday evening as did the special services on sunday morning and evening the good friday evening concert has become an annual musical treat which local music lovers look forward to in in creasing numbers in addition to choral numbers the program fea tured a male quartette comprised of carl boadway percv stover john hammersley and delbert booth a ladies trio of mrs m murphy miss jean hosie and miss winifred davis and solo numbers by mrs g kel- lington mrs robt bone mr carl boadway mr delbert booth and mr john hammersley mr l c murphy conducted the choir and mrs chas nolan presided at the organ sparkling comedy gets headlines in london paper embro continuation school in the london district staged a fine comedy last week entitled it cant be done carmen e powell former principal of stouffvule and now principal at embro personally supervised the comedy and those who remember him will know how well he could be master of cere monies for such an occasion illus trated with nearly a half page of pictures the london free press said in part the embro continua- tion school sparkling comedy was staged at the annual commence ment and will be repeated an ex ample of school enterprise the pro duction gave every pupil in the school a part the play was under direction of principal cepowell it was the culmination of weeks of hard work and was capably handled mr al greenwood new toronto and former east end merchant here was in town over the weekend mrs greenwood has been spending a week at the home of her parents mr and mrs john ashenhurst goodwood attend the wms quilting this friday afternoon in the basement of the united church a lot of good work will be accomplished and all women who possibly can are invit ed to have a hand in it miss muriel spofford from kirk- land lake is spending easter holi days with her mother mrs- robt spofford the stouffvule junior hockey club wish to acknowledge the receipt of a fine donation of 10 from dr s t bodendistel of this town while the club has never solicited donationsa number backed the local executive in this functioning in town as usual curlers the members of the stouffvule i curling club are asked to assemble at the club house this fridav night at s oclock to hear the years fin ancial report and complete the business of the season just closed mrs robson nichols is in town staving at the home of her daughter and soninlaw dr and mrs freel mrs nichols who is 87 flew from vancouver she found it necessary the accumulation of sand and dirt from the main street pave ment that had gathered there over the winter season after the new fire truck arrives the town will have its own truck for removal of dirt april 5 in stouff vule a quiet wedding was solem nized at the home of the brides parents when beryl isabel brillin- ger daughter of mr and mrs walter c brillinger became the bride of robert lindsay sanderson son of mr and mrs william g sanderson rev douglas davis officiated the bride given in mar riage by her father wore a dusty rose silk jersey dress matching hat and naw accessories she carried a nosegay of white and rapture roses miss barbara brillinger sister of the bride was her only attendant wearing powder blue crepe with black accessories and a nosegay of daphne sweet peas and forget-me- nots russel prouse was best man the brides mother chose a navy crepe suit with navy carnations the grooms mother wore a brown printed silk with brown accessories and corsage of johanna hill taylor foreign secretary of the dominion board of the wms of the united church of canada was the special speaker at the easter thankoffering meeting held in stouffvule united church last thursday afternoon with mrs gunn president in the chair mrs tavlor returned recently from africa where she went as a repre sentative from our church to the first postwar international mis sionary conference and therefore was well fitted to bring to us first hand information on her topic africa she had the privilege or visiting many parts of that land and of seeing living conditions in putlying districts which are still or the most primitive type mrs tay lor stressed the great desire of the people for education and the crying need of literature for those who have learned to read for the first time african delegates to this con ference were treated on an equality with representatives from eur opean and american countries we were given a vivid word picture or the progress being made at our mis sion stations in angola through the tireless efforts of our missionaries along evangelistic medical and educational lines native workers deserve great credit for carrying on the work so faithfully against great odds the program of the meeting was planned and carried out by the gtoup of which mrs riches and mrs percy stover are leaders mrs spofford rendered a solo accompanied by mrs c nolan mrs thomas assisted by mrs f l button gave an inspiring easter message in the worship service mrs hastings introduced the speak er in her usual capable manner and mrs clayton baker very fittingly expressed the thanks of the meet ing to all taking part visitors were present from out of town as well as local organizations at the close of the meeting refreshments were served in the schoolroom and a social hour was enjoyed contri buted salesmen for radio licenses were in town on good friday doing a housetohouse canvass since re newals for licenses were only due april 1st nobody had attended to the detail and the salesmen did a good business just what the gov ernment get out of this after paying men to race around the towns and villages collecting a paltry 250 at every door is not known to us but it certainly looks on the cheap side for the dominion government to have men out in this fashion those who did not procure their renewals at this time should do so without delay from issuers in town mowder house still for sale a home that was established dur ing the first great war was broken up last week when the household effects of the late mr and mrs jos mowder were sold by auction the two occupants of the home since the death of mrs mowder frank and mae found accommodation else where miss mowder has taken an apartment with mr and mrs birkett and frank is with mr and mrs grant turner who are just starting housekeeping on church street in the former williamson house at saturdays sale bidding for the property was not too brisk and the place did not come near the reserve bid the property is a solid brick in good repair well located and the absence of buyers who could obtain immediate possession was a surprise however there was private offers for the place before the sale and this kind of buyer will now have an opportunity to buy the new town maintenance man harry vanneno is now in his new employment and no doubt will do a good job as he is a splendid work er and very capable he will keep the pavement clean repair the leaks in water system should there be any and generally attend to the duties arising about town and which are the liability of the muni cipality easter services were well attend ed in the town churches and in those in the surrounding townships pastors of the various charges report too many in attendance were making their all too infre quent visit to church said one pastor we have the onces which means once a sunday and no more then we have the oncers for whom the term means once a year and no more brother passes suddenly mr charles r mcmullen union- ville brother of mrs harmon hoover of stouffvule passed away suddenly on tuesday april 1st while riding on a milk truck with the driver jack mccarthy on his milk route with silverwoods trans port mr mcmullen had not been in good health for some time though had often taken the trip to toronto with the milk truck on tuesday he seemed in usual health and was expecting to make the round trip as the truck was proceeding along the highway to ward markham at the tenth the passenger collapsed and was dead in a few minutes mr mcmullen was born at dun- barton in 1891 and had lived the greater part of his life at unionville he was a veteran of world war 1 he is survived by two brothers and one sister herman of union ville and ezra of toronto and edith mrs harmon hoover stouffvule
