third concession of whitchurch for twentv years died in east general of fav01 ed the p p politics in the pulpit by lewis milligan the question as to whether prea chers should discuss politics in the pulpit was recently put to crosssec tions of the canadian people in a gallup poll and the result was said to be overwhelmingly against pul pit politics the question was put thus do you think clergymen should or should not discuss poli tics during the sermon the re sponse was as follows should not 75 should 15 undecided 10 it was pointed out that the majority ispital and was buried at kettle- district farmer has been resold at hv c test week the illinois state fair for 1010 i ed the clergy deal with public issues from the moral standpoint as re- geo todd clerk a s farmer auctioneer lated to the broad problems of the day rather than votecatching or party issues those who were opposed to the idea are said to have reasoned that the church was not the place for politics or that it would make the pulpit an organ of propaganda or it breaks morale and the spiritual uplift of the service those who favored it contended that politics are part of everday life that the clergy can stir up people to take an interest in civic affairs and that there should be more christianity in politics and the clergy should point out the way for us even the 75 would probably agree with this last argument whether it be applied to politics business or domestic life but poli tics is such a controversial subject upon which the members of most congregations are sharply divided and the preachers themselves being men like the rest of us are also of diverse opinions some of the clergy hold strong personal views on politics and if every preacher were to use the pulpit as a platform for the promotion of his own political opinions then the churches would become a political pandemonium this is not a question of freedom of speech it is a question as to whether the preachers should enter into a freeforall fight on party politics for politics cannot be dis cussed in these days without refer ence to political parties or groups the great majority of the clergy do refrain from discussing politics in their sermons but this does not and should not prevent them from in sisting upon the observance of christian principles in all the affairs of life i once heard a great preacher say that his job and that of the church was to make more good men and women if the churches were to succeed in that then our politics and our social problems would take care of them selves religion after all is a per sonal matter and society is no better than the individuals of which it is composed the preachers and the pastors mission is primarily to the individual soul the christian gospel is not a theory of economics or of government although it may and does have an indirect influence upon the social order but man must first of all be brought to realize that he is something more than animal and that this something cannot be satisfied and rendered happy by economic systems or acts of parlia ment aonoc ion we appreciate the pleasant friendships and business relations of the past and wish for you a happy and prosperous new year international i atkinson mcieer agent motors stouffviixb ioc ioc ioe30e i0e30i 4 out of 5 women who win prizes for home baking robin hood flour
