barley crop contests the ontario department of agriculture has released the results of the judging of the standing field crop competitions in oats and barley sponsored by the south ontario agricultural society the judging was done by gordon han cock of peterborough on july 17 in the oat competition there were fourteen entries and ten in the barley class the different scores reveal the closeness of the contest and also the high standard of the individual entries eight cash prizes will be awarded in each class one of the rules of the competi tion is that each prize winner must girl struck by car driver charged an eightyearold girl is in the sick childrens hospital in toron to now after being hit by a car on thursday night and the driver of the car is charged with being in toxicated while in charge of a car and with dangerous driving the girl is helen sutherland the daughter of mr and mrs arthur sutherland of claremont and she was struck down by a car driven by john blair of brooklin as she was walking across the main st near her home the accident happened at approximately 10 oclock thurs day night when the driver appar ently failed to see the little girl in the path of his car after being attended to by dr n f tomlinson of claremont helen was rushed to the toronto hospital she has a badly broken thigh and suffered head injuries and shock police say that her condition is not regarded as serious but that the broken leg will take many weeks to heal as the break is near the hip and will need special treatment weights will have to be used on the leg for some weeks before it can be set helen is one of seven children in the sutherland family and mr sutherland operates a butcher shop in claremont the accident was investigated by constable jack norton of clare mont and provincial constable harold quantrill of the whitby de tachment and blair who stopped his car at the scene of the accident was arrested and taken to the county jail he was charged by pc quantrill with dangerous driv ing and with being intoxicated while in charge of a car and was released on bail of 1000 find drowned lad after 25 days the body of harry murphy 23 year old rcaf veteran who was drowned in chalk lake while on a swimming party there on july 27 last was recovered wednesday afternoon last week about 3 pm the drag which had been in use in searching for the body caught on a stump and a truck was called to help pull it loose the agitation which was set up is believed to have dislodged the body for it floated free to the surface in 3035 feet of water prov constable maguire and quantrill had been dragging the lake ever since the accident and when their efforts were unsuccess ful the rcaf sent an eightman squad composed of deep water grappling specialists from the rc af marine section in trenton to their assistance the parents of the dead veteran mr and mrs murphy were on their way from their home in sas katchewan to visit their son at the toronto rehab school
