during the sicil ian campaign the memorial was fashioned by italian crafts men out of syracuse limestone with a superimposed crusaders sword and will be the central- feature of the canadian ceme- teiy in sicily births phillips at the grace hospital toronto on dec 23rd 1943 to mr and mrs kenneth phillips a daughter lynda florence thom at the private patients pavilion toronto general hospital on dec 26 1943 to mr and mrs earl thom a daughter one of brock townships finest citi zens as well as one of its oldest john weatheral died last week in his 87th year a man of sterling qualities he will be greatly mourned in the derry- ville district where he spent so many years he served the township of brock as a councillor deputy reeve and reeve for several terms and was an active worker in the united chur ch at derryville surviving are two sons donald and ross his wife whose maiden name was annie ross predeceased him some years and one son j gordon also predeceased the father mrswea- theral and bobbie from stouffville attended the funeral at derryville last friday r ti lemon vi lle mr ed barker and florence spent christmas at leaside mr and mrs irwin journeyed- to barrie to spend christmas with mr irwins brother mr herm burkholder and mrand mrs fred harwood and family spent saturday in toronto with relatives miss marion vanxostrand had tea on friday night with miss florence barkey and then called on other friends on christmas eve all who knew mrs brooks are in deed sorry she is leaving our midst even too she was here but a f3w months the superior quality of her personality as well as her unceasing work will have a definite influence in promoting the more intelligent things of life in all with whom she came in contact our school trustees have been for tunate in securing mrs s w hast ings to return to the teaching profes sion and assume the roll of teacher at lemonville until the summer holi day season at least the resignation of the present teacher left the posi tion vacant at this christmas period and mrs hastings will assume the duties when school opens next tues day her teaching days were spent at ringwood mrs j brooks and the public school pupils are to be congratulated on the high calibie concert they pro duced on dec 17 the opening num ber was ascene in old king coles court calling for the carollers songs of the empire and other entertain ers then four children presented a short play from alice in wonderland the highlight of the program was an operetta santas vacation in which all the children participated solo parts were taken by joan gilroy phyiiia wells lenore spence and shirley spence the leading parts were splendidly acted by george timbersas santa and lenore spence as mrs santa while costumes were being donned for the operetta mrs roy irwin delighted the audience by playing carols on the cathedral chimes and mrs bruce winterstein and miss florence barkey played piano duets mrs vzztq compliments of the corner store claremont and mr and mrs harvey bunker were guests of their parents mr and mrs n bunker for christ mas we were sorry to hear thct miss leta bunker is in the hospital suf fering fiom the effects of flu we too still have quite a few confined to their homes with flu guests at bert lewis for the holi day were mr and mrs roy seebeck and family and mr and mrs joan lewis and family of kinsale mr and mrs wm reesor enter tained their family on christmas day sorry to say mr ireesor is confined to his bed at present with the flu and couldnt attend nomination mr and mrs mcmillan and daugh ters greenbank and mr and mrs herman kerry and three sons ot epsom were guests of mr and mrs e howsam and family on christmas day mr and mrs leonard adams and little daughter of mountain view and mr and mrs pellat and family pine grove were guests over the holiday with their parents mr and mrs wm eckardt guests for the holiday at william slacks were mrs eckardt mr and mrs j slack stouffville miss merle slack port reeve of whitchurch and is a capable councillor on monday he received an acclama tion to remain in office uxbridge man killed in action member of the ontario regiment tank since the day war was de clared trooper morley russell spencely 21 formerly of uxbridge was killed m action in italy on dec lgth according to official word re ceived monday by his wife mrsdoro- thy spenceiy 54 william st oshawa the message gave no details of where he received his fatal wounds but letters to his wife indicated that he was with his unit in the thick of the fighting leading to rome trooper spencely enlisted at ux bridge sept 3 1939 and was with the ontario regiment tank ever since he is survived by his widow mr3 doiothy spencely secretary with the oshawa fire department by his father russell spencely of uxbridge by one brother frank of uxbridge and four sisters mrs m sanders of toronto mis b cook of whitby miss madill spencely of oshawa and miss jean spencely of sunderland victoria square years eve on friday dec 31 in the sunday school room there will be crokinole and chinese check ers which will be followed by a watch night service girls are ask ed to provide lunch everybody wel come the sunday school entertainment last thursday evening was a great success the members of the be- j ginners primary and junior girls class gave recitations and songs ac companied at the piano by miss doreen gooding mr glebe of head ford showed moving pictures marl- times winter sports hiking on top of the world and christmas cann ons which were much enjoyed mrs alvin caseley sang to several num bers misses margaret and joy mort- son and coral perkins a piano trio santa claus arrived and helped to distribute the gifts melville dan thornhill of kitchener spent the christmas holiday at the home
