far away the people are very generous over here and will do al most anything for you the weather has been foggy and damp and seems to chill one to the bone so far there has been no cold weather of any account seems strange not to see a a mile east of the eighth all the other mills around were run from a waterwheel but this mill of mr brodies was run by steam power the saw was about six feet long and it stood upright the boiler was mitchell and mrs jim tindall have rev p g lehman to be at emmanuel bible school rev p g lehman former minis ter of the mennonlte brethren in christ churches at mount joy and dicksons hill will be back in this community to conduct a week of special ministry in emmanuel bible school which isibeng held in the mbc church at gormley mr lehman has been a member of the teaching staff of emmanuel bible school since its inception in 1940 but this year due to his heavy re sponsibilities in connecton wth the large congregation he serves in kitchener his work at the school will be confined to the one week of special ministry from fehruary 22 to 26th he will give the students special lec tures on experimental religion each evening during the week he will conduct a service at 8 pm which will be open to the public these services will be related to the series of day time lectures to the students it is hoped that many wjll avail ithemelves of this opportunity of contact with emmanuel bible school and of enriching their lives through this ministry of bro lehman ahout twenty five feet long but a smaller one having more tubes was later installed mr brodie an uncle of stoufcvilles james brodie sold his mill to two men john imcneil and donald rae around 1870 later it was sold to joel baker and john jmieson after mr jamieson with drew from the partnership the frame of the mill was moved to stouffville fart of it is still used as a part of the chopping mill mr brodie could buy the best pine logs two feet through at the top and twelve reet long for twenty- five cents each huge piles of logs which now would bs valuable were burned when the land was cleared sometimes a pile of logs was covered with dirt and then fired when the wood had burned to char coal it was used by blacksmiths later coal was used in its place much of the timber cut around ballantrae and vivian was drawn to the corner at baker hill then it was taken to frenchmans bay this meant that the drivers would have to leave about 4 am when they arrived at the bay they would leave the ttmber on the ice in the spring this timber was floated down the st lawrence to quebec from there it was sent to great britain besides squared and board tim ber spars and masits were sent across the ocean the spars were up to two feet through and 70 or 80 ft long the masts were about three feet through at the butt and 80 or 100 feet long it is thought that if a belt of for est 3 or 4 rods wide had been left along the north side of every farm it would have blocked soil erosion by winds and kept the land from drying out third line uxbridge mr and mrs stanley slack had the misfortune of having their house and most of the contents as well as 60 in cash burned on saturday while they were away to altona they returned in time to get the few things that were saved out mrs gordon taylor and little garry who were living with them also lost all of their clothes and other belongings
