pages local tax rate struck shows but slight change from last years figure on monday evening stouffville municipal council struck the tax rate at 26 mills which is a slight increase over last year of half a mill the half mill increase is due to the fact that the ontario government last year paid 1 mills of our rate but this year are paying one mill the council could not absorb the half mill and had to pass if on to the ratepay ers however it will mean only a few cents to the average tax payer the rateable property is 650- 425 and the rates making up the 26 mills are as follows money raised mill rate 5300842 county rate 47 357735 general rate 55 392184 road debenture 6 350440 school debenture 54 56000 public library 1 152400 streetlights 24 687900 school purposes 105 32000 relief 5 the reeve said he had followed the usual custom in proclaiming the first monday in august as civic holiday and council approval of the action wesley hill appeared at the meeting and protested that a tree had been cut in front of his lot on clark street also that wood was being piled on the street allowance council said they had given no authority to cut a tree and took steps to investigate the complaint reeve weldon presided at the meeting all members being present namely r e brown ira rusnell delbert holden and john silverthcrn twins born 16 pounds while not the first pair of twins to be born at the brier- bush hospital in stouffville the babes presented to mr and mrs john h cleverdon on the 7th concession of markham last week are the first living twins born in that institution and their weight is 16 pounds theyre a great pair one 8 and the other 7i pounds and judging by reports these young fellows are going to enjoy life immensely just now they are going to be as popular as the quints jr farmers to hold ambu dance at one of the largest direct ors meetings in the history of the york county junior farm ers held in the office of the agricultiual representative at newmarket on monday night it was decided unanimously to accept the very generous offer of mr george davies of mussel- mans lake to donate the cedar beach pavilion and orchestra for a mammoth dance for the junior and bill mantle came out with only a few bruises earl turned out for a passing car during a heavy rain and fearing that he was about to go into the ditch on the right side swung the car sharply back as the other car passed only to land in the ditch on the left side of the road the passing car did not know anything was wrong and failed to stop overtaken by tragedy on the bowling green albert e miller prominent uxbridge citizen and native of mount albert died in midst of game i on wednesday afternoon of last week while engaged in play at the cannington lawn bowling tournament at the northern town albert e miller of uxbridge expired suddenly on the greens he was seen to slump to the ground and passed away immediately dr mellow one of his partners in the game was at hand when the tragedy overtook them mr miller had been bowling excel lent ends and had made a second kitty toucher for which he was being warmly congratu lated a moment before in ill health for some years suffering from a neivous break down mr miller was consider ed to be greatly improved lately and enjoyed his favorite pas time on the green immensely only a week before his death he bowled at stouffville in the annual mens tournament at cannington he was accompanied by dr mellow andrew mc- phail and fred willis born at mount albert ab as he was called by his wide circle of friends spent his early life there and conducted a boot and shoe business he married maggie lemon sister of misses mary and jessie lemon of church street stouffville the happy union was shockingly short for mrs miller died in two years as did their infant child after this mr miller went to uxbridge where he lived most of his life with his sister mrs j f brownscombe later in life he married mabel button daughter of the late a t button of that town who predeceased him in 1925 the funeral from the browns- combe home in uxbridge on saturday took place to uxbridge cemetery a peculiar incident in connec tion with the manner of mr millers death is the fact that his office partner for many years fw thompson also died suddenly on the bowling green in uxbridge a few years ago flying west this evening mr john ratcliff will fly from toronto this thursday evening at 1045 for calgary where he will arrive the next morning at the same hour 1045 over the transcontinen tal airways by normal means of travel this is a trip of 2000 miles the month of june the month of june reached an alltime high point in de mand for electrical current by stouffville from the ontario hydro commission our peak demand was 2992 hp and strange to say our peak occurs on a tuesday between 11 and 12 in the morning a thing it has been doing for a year or more it is estimated that with so many electric stoves cooking dinner plus the fact that tues day is ironing day in the major ity of homes a peak load is registered we have not drawn a night peak twice in a year to the uninitiated the peak load means the highest amount of current demanded in a period of twenty minutes an appara tus registers the draw taken by the whole village so that if during one hour we were using a total of 100 hp and the next enough users turned on lights to demand another 50 hp then this is all charted by the machine and we pay on the high est drawn of the month the cost of power to the vill age for june was 100980 while receipts from customers was around 1700 the difference be tween the cost of power and the receipts goes to maintain the local system miss toronto 1940 the tribune contacted miss frances oxtoby the sixteen year old sweet slim girl pictur ed here
