wishes to the rae staff sunday school lesson lesson for september 3 isaiah a wpe dedicated to god golden text here am i send me isa 68 the lesson as a whole it is always of interest when one is privileged to get a personal and intimate account of the revelation of god to a human soul in this chapter isaiah lets us into the secret of his wonderful power and equip ment tor service ho takes us into the sanctuary shows us how he lord was revealed to him and lets us know the circustances of his call to tho prophetic office this was the real starting point of his effec tive ministry we know from chapter 1 verse 1 that he began to witness for god in the days of king uzziah as the events recorded in chapter 6 took place in the year that ruler died wo conclude that these exercises were subsequent to his earlier prophetic testimony many another servant of god has preach ed to others before learning to know the lord himself in a definite way and before being brought into the full consciousness of cleansing and enduement for service yet we need not think of this as isaiahs second blessing it was rather a part of gods dealing with him in order that he might be better pre- pared to give out the word to others because of knowing the reality of having to do with god himself the historical setting uzziah died 75s bc and it was in this same year that isaiah had the experiences here recorded just how- much earlier he began his pro phetic ministry we are not told verse by verse isaiah 61 i saw also the lord that word also is signifi cant was it a sight of god that that brought the leprosy out on uzziahs forehead the- same god reveal ed himself to isaiah while he was attending a service in the temple at jerusalem however it was not in judgment but in grace that he showed himself as the infinitely holy one verse 2 the seraphim we may drop the s the hebrew plural is indicated by the im these glorious beings seem to be messengers of grace as distinguish ed from the cherubim who speak rather of righteous and judgment verse 3 holy holy holy it is an ascription of praise and ado ation to the triune god whose glory is manifested in all creation verse 4 the posts of the door moved strange that inanimate pillars should be easier to move than the hard hearts of sinful men verse 5 woe is me the effect of beholding god is to make one realize his own unworthiness and the corruption of his own heart isaiah saw himself in the light of jehovahs infinite holiness verse g a live coal from off the altar it was the altar of sacrifice which prefigured the cross that live coal told of the fire of judgment having burned itself upon the offering verse 7 thine iniquity is tak en away and thy sin purged the divinelysent messenger proclaimed the good news of redemption and purification from sin through him whose one offering was pictured in the sacrifice of the altar verse 8 whom shall i send to the cleansed soul comes the call for service the vision of a needy world isaiah responds here am i send me verse 9 and he said go this was the prophets commission he was to be gods messenger even though the people refused to hear verse 10 lest they see hear and understand even though the word seemed to have no other effect than to harden them in their sins ad rebellion isaiah was to proclaim the message faith fully verse 11 lord how long it takes faith to continue to witness to an unheeding people the prophet was to preach until there were none left to hear verse 12 a great forsaking because they had forsaken god he would give them up to the power of their cruel enemies in retributive justice verse 13 yet in it shall be a tenth god always has his remnant the election of grace who hear his word and turn to him in re pentance these constitute a holy seed who are the real substance of the nation or people to whom the message of the lord is carried the heart of the lesson the servant of god is responsible to the lord himself having re ceived his commission he is to go forth in the name of the one who sends him declaring the message committed to him the results must be left with god whether men hear or whether they forbear ezek 2 35 he who proclaims the word faithfully has delivered his soul the apostle paul entered into this when he spoke of being a sweet savor of christ unto god both in them that are saved and in them that perish 2 cor 215 god is honored when his truth is preach ed no matter what attitude the hearers take toward it and that word will not return void but will accomplish the divine purpose isa 5511 business
