vol 52 no 15 jhmffitflle ctibttne awarded jos clark memorial trophy for 1939 stouffville ontario thursday july 13 1939 eight pages suggests comb nation of township of ices treasurer and tax collector might be made one the township of whitchurch may unite the two offices of tax collector and treasurer if a notice of motion introduced at the regular council meeting on saturday is acted on the en tire council rather favored the idea when it was first broached by councillor h kidd but all wanted time to fully consider the matter from every angle mr kidd estimated that about 200 would be saved by uniting the two offices when the matter came up for discussion kidd and wells introduced a resolution to com bine the two positions of treas urer anl tax collector j craw ford to do the entire job re ceiving added compensation of 100 this resolution was later allowed to stand as a notice of motion mr kidd agreeing that the matter should be seriously considered and discussed before definite action taken it is not entirely a new idea to me as i had ratepayers approach me to do this when i was reeve explained mr kidd it is only since 1938 that it has been legal to combine these offices although it has been go ing on in some municipalities even before it was legal reeve toole said he was pre pared to vote on the question but would prefer to give the matter further consideration deputy reeve cook took a similar stand as did councillor george leary mr wells who seconded the resolution of mr kild said he was willing to allow the matter to wait as a notice of motion clerk crawford said he would not like anyone to think that he was aiming at taking some other persons job but if coun cil wished to combine the offices he would do his best to handle the dual position with a little office help at tax time r e ratcliff tax collector has received 300 plus an allow ance of 3000 for postage com bing the office the bills would all be sent by mail costing about 3000 additional postage plus any addition for help engaged in the treasurers office it was estimated tax bills are receiv able at the banks in stouffville aurora and newmarket stouffville entrance results passed on the five to a dollar store in town last satur day evening the bill was a mexican five issued by a form er government of the republic but down in mexico when one government overthrows an other by force they repudiate the money issue as a rule and unscrupulous persons make a business of passing off the de valued currency on innocent people abroad the worthless bill has a strik ing similarity to our canadian money which has been marred to some extent by printing two languages on it making the bills less discernible as to the de nomination 10th con markham farmers threshed alsike
