people are called upon to suffer so much yet others skim along all their lives without confronting anything very serious our sympathies go out at this time to that little family over at atha where a young mother is left witli four small children after less than ten years of married life the young father died when his baby was but a week old what a tragedy for any family to face some times we take realities that provide wonderful blessings as mere every day facts and forget to be truly thankful for them for instance the visit of the king and queen to the usa was a momentous event at the moment they left british soil at niagaragreat guns boom ed out the fact that the king had stepped out of his country but the point is the significance of that visit and how thankful we ought to be because of the cordial relations between these two great english speak ing nationsfriends instead of foes handshakes instead of bayonets another and greater fact we accept and often for get to give thanks for it is that the old time religion of our forefathers abraham isaac and jacob is just the same today a couple of sundays ago the rev archer wallace brought home this truth to a vast audience in uxbridge on the occasion of the anniversary services of the business mens bible class religion itself never chang es the struggles that went on in the hearts of abraham and the other saints is no different today said this noted speaker our view point may change but religion never the religion of jesus christ serves the modern generation with all its accumulated knowledge just the same as it did centuries ago and what a marvelous religion it is to do this are we truly thankful for these blessings that mean so much to us a threeminute telephone converation between stouff ville and australia costs 2550 while attached wide attention and its disposal has occasioned sharp and pointed press comment the ottawa journal cites the facts as follows about midnight on a night last october the doctor was driving his car on a toronto street when it struck and killed a bakers helper a married man with five children wheeling home on his bicycle the driver was arrested and tried and the jury disagreed a second trial was ordered and it resulted in an acquittal the toronto telegram recites various parcels in the evidence immdiately prior to the collision the doctors car had been travelling from five to ten miles above the legal limit according to mr justice makins the trial judge the night was pleasant cool and dry the street was wide with no street car tracks it must have been well lit there were two parked cars on the north side of the street in his combination of circumstances the doctors car struck and killed the bicyclist he did not stop immediate- lyhis thought was not that someone might have been injured but that there was a whiskey bottle in the glove compartment of his car he drove on and threw the bottle out of the window and stopped his car 750 ft from the scene of the accident when he was overtaken bv another car dr snyder also threw from his car a heavy drink ing glass the judges charges cited in the ottawa citizen pointed out the bearing of the recently amended law and the alternatives open to the jury the judges charge cited in the ottawa citizen manslaughter if they decided he had been grossly negligent in his handling of the car and therefore caused clements death if they had reasonable doubt as to his guilt on the manslaughter count he said they might conyict him on a reduced charge of dangerous driving providing they felt he had been negligent to a lesser degree when after some five and a half hours deliberation the jury rendered a verdict of complete acouittal his lord ship as reported in the toronto star said to dr snyder the decision of the jury has so shocked the public mind that it has raised in various quarters the question of the adequacy of jury trials for manslaugher charges snyder has been dismissed as a york counnty coroner on recommendation of hon g conant who evi dently has been doing some thinking on this matter stat ing the dismissal was the result of dr snyders conduct as disclosed by the court action c work is better than relief relief has been discontinued in the townships of whitchurch and uxbridge and in other municpalities but a few receive aid because all cannot preemptorily be cut off relief without dire distress as in the case of markham where in the southern end of the township many people who come out from the larger centres get stranded and helpless in one municipality next to stouffville a relief in vestigator went out and discovered something that im pressed in his mind the poor substitute relief is for those in need work the township should give not relief here is how relief makes a man feel the in vestigator was sent to examine two cases where the relief had been applied for but through an oversight or some thing had not actually been given at the first house an angry wife complained its been two weeks since my husband applied for reliefand not a thing done about it well he just couldnt wait any longer and went out and got a jobat the second place where a lady had been wait ing the authorities an angry husband was still at home but very much vexed he demanded to know of the relief officer is this the service vou provide the taxpayers of the township ont county spent 12000 on snow addressing ontario county council at the opening of the june session warden fred clayton reeve of thorah said that he favored as low a tax rate as possible this year but he felt that necessary work should be undertaken the work on the county road system particularly should not be neglected i think if we con struct as much permanent road as possible we will be lessening the cost of road maintenance in the end the warden said the warden revealed that the heavy snow of the past season had cost the county nearly 12- 000 to keep the roads open on this account care would have to be taken in expenditures this year recent inspections made of county roads and bridges re vealed these with a few excep tions to be in very good shape the tale that wags the dog scarboros licensed dog popu lation last year according to license inspector w j moore numbered approximately two thousand of this number one thousandfive hundred were registered as gentlemen and one hundred and sixty as ladies the balance were occupants of thirtythree registered kennels what the unlicensed popula tion was no one can say there is reason to believe that it is decreasing each year however as the revenue from dog licenses has increased from 222950 in 1931 to 546950 in 1938 mr moore is apparently doing an exceptionally good job for the taxpayers to date this year licenses have been issued for seven hun dred dogs eightyfive bitches and thirteen kennels iimmmmmmmmm jacques cartier this daring navigator won the proud title of discoverer or canada in 1534 he made his first voyage and landed at gaspe where he
