being 500 per member and 300 for begnners renewed interest in the game was antici pated with the opening of the season in a few weeks the pres ident is j b sanders vicepres idents c v pipher and j s dougherty secretary jtreasurer t b rae mr f l button were elected representative to the provincial lawn bowling association it is reported that a small town brawl such as might be portrayed any week in the col umns of the star weekly by gregory clark and jimmy frise was staged in the establishment of a markham smithy last week when two of the local checker enthusiasts came to serve blows over an alleged false move on the part of one of the players the accused shark landed a hefty right on his opponents face which brought a real flareup only quick action on the part of several onlookers prevented the fist swinger from being carved up badly as the other gent drove him clean out of the hang out brandishing every thing from a pickaxe to a wagontongue it it understood that the proprietor has evident ly witnessed a lttle too close a call and into the forge has gone the checker board apparently there is no closed season for checker players backrite tablets for the kidneys for backache tired feeling dizziness rheumatism head ache bladder troubles they help to cleanse the blood and also act on the liver the ideal spring tonic for cleansing the system j m storey druggist in the mail last week was a re newal for the tribune from an old friend in cappon alta mrs daniel yake well known to many of our readers mrs sarah cook practical nurse who has been attending miss urquhart in toronto all winter is visiting in stouffville with mrs charles badgero while she called also on mrs ollie flewell at ballantrae mrs cook announces that she will not be at her home in good wood prepaied to accept a case there or she wul be subject to call wherever her services are desired local car drivers who buy 400 gallons of gasoline a year which pei is a fair average for pa cars will pay the ontaro government a tax of 32 on that purchase when the increase goes into effect or 8 more than he paid last year he will be paying a tax of about 40 per cent on the retail price of gasoline and that isnt some thing to laugh off it is exactly thirty years since mr ramsey e sinclair moved from stouffville to tor onto and last week he was glad to meet a few old friends whom he has kept in touch with over the three decades he spent a few hours in town on thursday and recalled that when he lived in town he was travelling for a large drug company covering much of the province but aside from living in stouffville mr sinclair has another reason for remembering the place his de parted wife sister of mr sen eca baker gives him an added interest in the dstrict and he still ownes a brick house on main street west it is frequently rumored that mr robert ratcliff intends to build a fine home ri town for his own use but mr ratcliff informs the tribune that he hesitates to make the move be cause of unsettled conditions which might plunge our country into war this is just a small example of how far reaching an effect the unsettlement in europe can be mr ratcliff has several boys and if they are ever called for service why the seniour member of the family is not too old by any means to work his farm but heres hop ing that last weeks peace move ment made by president rose- velt will soon give the world some semblance of settled con ditions for a decade or so mr and mrs robt johnston cnr agent motored to alliston on wednesday of last week to attend the funeral of the late merten and son walter from toronto were visiting the old mertens home west of town on sunday although we heard many pro tests against the 8c gasoline tax right here in stouffville we have yet to learn of a single car being laid up because of it people w not give up con veniences even if to have them spells disaster the townline from gormley east to the 5th concession is in a deplorable state this spring and should be brought to the attention of the county road engineers by the officials of both whitchurch and markham township lack of anything like a ditch along this heavily trav elled townline forces the water down the centre of the high way which became unfit for motor traffic scrapping the road will act as first aid remedy but when the weather and other conditions permit some body needed ditches should be set up the longsuffering people of gormley would then have a needed motor road to their trad ing centre in stouffville mrs clara wideman held a successful sale of surplus furni ture at her spacious home in gormley yesterday at one time mrs widemans residence was used by the ontario bible school and later as a rest home but now these things having gone mrs wideman had a great of dough has been spent in the playoffs for that mug since 1893 mrs george lee was in town last week coming from her home in bobcaygeon for a short visit rev gordon duncan and sister miss annie duncan one more to the continuous cold weekends since christmas although the sun shone brightly and the day was clear farmers estimate that theie is sure to be late seeding for even if the change of moon
