the tribune stouffville ontario thursday march 16th 1939 page seven one game to decide whitchurch championship big crowd expected for town ship title game thursday night riding high on a onegoal lead obtained over king city in the first game of their round last thursday ballantrae were forc ed right back into a deadlocked position again last week when king took a 43 decision in overtime in the local arena as in the first game both teams played a rugged brand of hock ey with a backchecking consis tency that made play very ragged each team counted once in the first stanza but king tallied the lone counter of the mid- session to pull along side the men of shell 44 on the round there were few penalties nes- bitt for ballantrae getting the only charge and that for board ing both squads scored again in the last period and sent the game into overtime when king for the first time in the series took the lead before the ten- minute session was up however mcnelly drilled one from well out which trickled through forfars legs to again place the round on even terms this comeback by king city necessitated a third game tues day night report of which is found elsewhere in this issue vandorf 5 lemonville 4 lou morden lemonvilles tower of defensive strength was noticeably absent when the 7th liners were nosed out 54 by the vandorf blues going into this final game tied 33 hennie of vandorf and tindall of lemonville each scored in the first period to keep the teams still on even terms the midsession was scoreless with play seesawing up and down neither team showing any marked advantage although both were subject to very close- calls around the net both teams ganged consider ably in the final round but most of the scoring chances went haywire through lack of organization in the opposition zone with sticks flying high temp ers exploded in several quar ters and two penalties were necessary before the fistic action subsided both players return ed the ice with no damage done but when lemonville drew a second trip to the cooler for boarding vandorf took the lead scoring with only four minutes remaining relief to end on april 1st all relief in uxbridge town ship will be cancelled on and after april 1st the council in session at goodwood decided last saturday only most ex treme case where old age or sickness are responsible will be considered it wassaid the session whitchurch tp vandorf saturday march 18 ing of all the representatives of the four teams concerned at uxbridge on thursday after noon when goodwood pulled from the running leaving stouffville and sunderland to battle it out for the title goodwood contend that abiding by the rules laid down at the beginning of the season the second and fourth place teams were to play off as were the third and first place teams however as uxbridge came right to the eve of the finals and then defaulted goodwood being the second place team whom they should have met claimed the bye or that they should be considered winners of this semifinal round owing to the uxbridge default stouffville and sunderland on the other hand held to the claim that since there were but three teams left in the playoffs the bye if any should go to sunderland who finished at the top of the league this would have meant a semifinal two out of three games between stouff ville and goodwood with the winner meeting sunderland goodwood they claim were not entitled to the preference goodwood did not feel inclin ed to accept this arrangement as they claimed there was then the possibility of them having to play in two rounds when they felt entitled to the ruling set down at the opening of the season thus they declined to continue in the league stouffville felt equally justi fied in their stand and are thus left with sunderland to decide a winner q o c d o n u o aox locaoi we have for all your feeds needs marmill and master chick starters growing and laying mash oyster shell grit charcoal cod liver oil and sugared york county according to a story in a file of aged newspapers at the public library down in st john nb his strength brought him trag edy he was born in york county in 1798 at saint john he lifted a 1200pound anchor once when annoyed he raised two 200pound men from their feet and banged their heads to gether on another occasion he playfully tore up roots and all an apple tree with a trunk four inches thick holding it only by a rung with one hand he could lift above his head a chair bear ing a 175pound man gardiner knew nothing about wrestling but he defeated a famous wrestler from nova scotia when word of this reached the miramichi district of new brunswick the greatest wrestler in that region set out for toms home to issue a challenge was in the family strength ran in the gardin er family toms sister also born in york county who an swered the challengers knock was described in the old news paper as a cyclone in skirts she told the miramichi man her brother was away but as youve come al this distance for some sport ill wrestle you myself when the visitor scoffed the girl replied with a crunching headlock three times in 15 minutes she pinned his should ers to the ground he didnt wait to fling a challenge at tom gardiner was quiet and ord inarily peaceful but in a york county lumber camp some where between toronto and stouffville a bully tormented him so much he lashed out with his fist the bully crumpled dead tom fled swearing hed never strike another man he became a deckhand on boats plying the mississippi one day a huge church bell was taken aboard a boat on which he worked the captain found the heavy bell was in the way on deck and wondered how he could get it moved tom overheard grinning he carried the bell to another place while the captain dined when the skipper came on deck again and asked what had happened to the bell tom said he had moved it the captain cursed him believing gardiner was lying but i did move it sir tom persisted ill move you you impertin ent liar roared the skipper planting his boot on the seat of toms trousers tom saw red he forgot his vow he struck the captain one blow with his fist again he killed a man and again he be came a fugitive from justice he fled west there he met a drunken prizefighter who boasted he could fell an ox with a blow the man picked a fight with tom he rained punches on the latters face stop it or ill have to hit you back said tom you yellow dog you would not have courage enough to hit a baby retorted the prize fighter so tom struck the single blow rocked the fighters head back with such force he suffer ed a broken neck and died gardiner fled a third time and was never heard from again
