ht tetwtw volxlvii no 32 stouffville ontario thursday october 27 1938 a v nolan jp publisher stores to continue with halfholiday but shaws general store and schells butcher shop will be open stouffville merchants voted two to one on monday evening to close their places of business every wednesday afternoon all year around excepting during the christmas season the action was strenuously opposed by the shaw store and onfe or two others harvey schell butcher fought the measure and con tended that if certain stores wished to close up then let them do so but they should not interfere he said with those who want to work mr schell later suggested that the store patrons should be allowed to vote on the idea with a secret ballot for the hardware firms messrs agnew and goudie each sfrongly favored the closing idea i was useo to it before i came to stouffville and certainly missed it said mr agnew for the brathwaite firm- reeve weldon who was vot- id chairman favored the clos ing idea but frowned on any suggestion that closing should oe the order at 1030 on satur days mr bert wilkinson super ior grocery who voted against closing on wednesday after noons in the winter agreed to submit to the majority for the sake of unity he said however i think it is a mistake to close our stores on wednesday after noons in the winter i am as much in favor of shorter hours as anyone and would be glad to take a couple of days off each week but we cant get away with it mr wilkinson signed the advertisment in this issue to close only as he says for unity and to prevent confusion among the public miss waters speaking for the shaw store explained how this firm had a heavy invest ment and employed much more labor than almost any other per son present just now they were preparing for christmas and needed every working hour looking over returns she found that wednesdays from janu ary to april were better shopp- ing days than monday or tues day and all in all she could not see that holidays in the dead of winter were called for if you are looking after business why lets look after it she said we are not hard up for holidays with one almost every summer month miss waters added reg button advanced a resolution to continue the half holiday all the year and this carried as stated by two to one mrs m e watts seconded the motion it was later decided that those who would close should band together and carry on an advertising scheme to acquaint the people with the fact that they would be closed all year excepting a few weeks at christmas those who refused to be led into this scheme to close in the winter season includ ed the smw store harvey schell butcher the drug stores have not signed ur to close either it will be noted in the dis play adv that all the barber shops will close also miss ruth badgeros beauty shop of course as it was pointed out any of these stores may serve a customer who comes to them likewise a barber may accom modate a customer under an emergency thus the rule to close is to be much like it has been in the past not too binding an obligation every grocery store has sign ed up to close with the exception of the east end grocery at 10th street thus will the present halfholiday roll along if the shaw store and schells butcher shop gather any support from other stores who may recant their position there would soon be a general breakup on the other hand some argue the half- day will become so natural we will wonder why all the fuss time will tell we call attention to the display adv in this issue signed by the merchants and business people bought building lot councfllor jack silverthorn garageman has purchased a 40 foot building lot on mill street from john madill the property is immediately across the lane
