bethany here on saturday when they defeated that team 102 it was a field day for the locals again who pounded out twelve hits and dropped only one error behind the brainy pitch ing of tip anderson who struck out no less than twelve men in the nine innings the biggest bright spot in the stouffville field was ross wide- man who besides doing a fine fielding job crashed two homers each with a man on bethany went into an early lead of one run in their half of the second but this success was shortlivect when wideman let go his first smashing blow into deep left scoring pennock ahead of him bethany have the services of two veteran players in the per sons of mcgill catcher and phil ips third base mcgill was formerly with sunderland when they won the championship last season on these two men beth koka james a urquhart of daytona beach florida former- manager of the national biscuit company died monday in the wellesley hospital he was brought to toronto by ambul ance following the seizure he was in his eightysecond year mr urquhart was born in stouffville and was a shoe mer chant here some fifty years ago he was a brother of john and george when a young man he moved to michigan later he went to st louis mo where for many years he was connected with the national biscuit com pany for the past fifteen years he had been a resident of day tona beach fla and had habit ually spent the summers in mus- koka mr urquhart retired from business some years ago he was an active member of day tona beach presbyterian church surviving are two sons clar ence and merle urquhart and two veterans big show to set a record for attendance since the reunion some years ago the trek to the park began as early as 1100 am when a good ly number were on hand to see the opening softball games ber of years mergen widow of the late william stots of cashel passed away peacefully at the ontario hospital whitby on friday september 2 1938 in her 59th year the funeral on monday afternoon took place from the family home at cashel to melville cemetery being at tended by quite a number of in timate friends from all over the neighborhood mrs stots was born at cashel and her aged father matthew mergen over 80 years of age still lives in the old home there she married the late mr stots 35 years ago but he has been dead three years an only son kenneth is a soninlaw of mrs william topham of stouffville there are three daughters living being miss kathleen at union ville mrs popham and mrs norman lotton of markham township died on farm where he was born messrs oscar baker bert baker morgan baker mpp and eugene another brother herbert passed away twentysix years ago resident here 40 years many attend funeral of david stoddart david stoddart 65 superin tendent of the york county in dustrial home for the aged for 17 years was buried tuesday from his lome avenue residence at newmarket the service conducted by rev dr d mclntyre was attended by a large number of relatives and friends mr stoddard served overseas with the 74th battalion surviving are two daughters mrs s w otton newmarket and mrs j r greer toronto one sister and two brothers a lifelong resident of this district for 75 years oliver johnson died at his home just north of stouffville on the first sideroad on saturday sept 3 following a lingering illness he was a man of quiet dispos ition and inherited the farm on which he died from his father the late robert johnson but for some years he lived in new market where he was employed in a factory it was there that his wife the former emma gower of whitchurch passed away thirteen years ago mr johnson is survived by one son robert on the homestead and one daughter alma who is the wife of rev norman mcleod a former baptist minister the funeral was held on mon day afternoon interment be ing made at newmarket ceme tery where his deceased wife is laid the service was in charge of rev w e smalley the late mr johnson was a member of the and welcome retreat for many acquaintances born in vaughan township almost 80 years ago now her maiden name was sarah mc clean daughter of duncan mc clean and mary anne mcclean she was twice married her first husband being the late henry burkitt to this union two children survive one son altum burkitt of oakville and one daughter miss jane at home thirtyfour years ago mrs birkett united in marriage with frank gordon and the couple have lived in town continuously since their mariage mrs burkitt had been in stouffville more than 40 years mr gordon who is em ployed in the local bakery has the sympathy of the whole community in his irreparable loss also sympathy goes out to the son and daughter and three grandchildren two of whom have always made their home with their grandmother being misses mildred and edra burkitt the funeral on labor day afternoon took place from the- late residence to stouffville cemetery rev l e atkinson the family pastor conducted the service the pall bearers being messrs lloyd turner w e morden ambrose stover milton storey clayt baker and martin tait wrong type chicken fancier anthony type a lad of 21 years is under arrest on a charge of stealing chickens from the pens of jas maynard union ville about 40 birds are alleged to have been taken last thurs day night constables barra- clough and gayman are on the case type was arrested in tor onto on monday evening report on markham water in a letter sent out from the department of public health at markham village council on tuesday evening it was stated that the town water shows signs of contamination york township and formerly of whitchurch was a mass of flames when friends and neighbors rushed to clarks assistance although they were helpless to save the cottage they poured water on both sides to prevent the fire from spreading some of the contents were also salvaged there was no one in the building when the fire broke out the loss is partially covered by insurance
