was held on saturday july 30 in exhibition park the day was spent in re newal of old acquaintances and meeting of new faces games and races were a new feature in the afternoons program one hundred members were in at tendance and sat down to bounti fully set tables for dinner and supper this group are the descen dants of thomas dowswell who came from devonshire england in 1831 and settled in woburn in scarborough many places were represent ed but the more distant were ellwood city pa newark nj buffalo and kenmore ny detroit essex and winnipeg man mr wm dowswell former carriage maker of claremont ontario and now of toronto was the oldest member present while margaret baker was the youngest since toronto is so con veniently situated for a large number of the clan it was decid ed to for the same day for those who did not go to kettleby missed one of the highlights in this years program mr and mrs walton are a most hospitable host and hostess and made our visit to their home one that will linger long in our memories the business meeting was held on the spacious verandah the president presiding after singing the opening ode mrs willis read the institute creed the roll call historical events brought to mind some happenings in our own burg and elsewhere mrs j a vannostrand recalled the fire at vandorf that started in the blacksmith shop and destroyed the community hall and sent sparks flying to the roof of the vannostrand home and caused considerable excitement for a while that day mrs arthur van nostrand told of her experience when the tornado swept across the lower part of vandorf des troying buildings and uprooting trees in its path mrs moynihan told us of kettleby as she knew it in her school days mrs cole gave her experience with that of her fathers and uncles families at the time of the chicago fire in 1871 while we had all heard of that fire mrs coles story of it made it very real mr walton gave the history of kettleby in its early days having seen it rise to a thriving little vllage with its mills and implement shop etc then after the dam had been washed away and the activities had ceased kettleby settled down to the quiet little place it is name was susanna dresser was born in markham township ontario in 1866 in 1887 she married robert j goheen of dundalk they farmed at dun- dalk until the spring of 1906 when they went to western can ada and settled near hume in ada and setled near hume in september of that year mr goheen and their daughter anna jane and brotherinlaw alex goheen died of typhoid fever in 1910 mrs goheen was married to alexander vanalstine of dundalk who also predeceas ed her mrs vanalstine is survived by two daughters mrs clarence stone of weyburn and mrs ruth mclnnis of saskatoon three sons eby goheen of de troit
