that was parish priest at ux- bridge he is an enthusiastic bowler and- has played on occasions on the stouffville greens on sunday afternoon just when the wind was blowing a hurricane and a blinding storm raged so that one could scarcely see a house across the road the fire flarm sounded and the brigade answered a call to the home of mrs pipher who occupies the east half of the double house opposite the presby terian church fortunately it wa3 only a chimney blaze and was readily put out by chief jennings and a tew of his aides who were able to apply a chemical from a bedroom into the chimney place it would have been almost perilous to have to climb to the top of the chimney dur ing that storm aud in a wind liat sent the thermometer below zero its a strange thing that this is the third time the fire brigade has beu called to this same chimney in a couple of years only recently the chimney was supposed to have been repaired but there must still be something lacking by the way it per forms on two occasions when dent law lived in the house the brigade put out fires in this chimney and the fire chief is convinced that the smoke conductor is at fault rather than the tenants another blaze was snuffed out be fore it made any headway at 130 on sunday morning our mill street citizen mr howard malioy was awakened by the crying of his cat and getting up to investigate he discovered a small blaze or smudge of smoke eminating from the sheds at the rear of ratcliffs store he notified mr ratcliff by telephone who in turn sent the fir chief to investigate it is presumed that someone threw a cigarette butt in to the old packing boxes and straw in the sheds which ultimately was fanned to a blaze and might have caused one of the worst fires in tne history of the village baked foods being carried on in the kitchen of the united church mrs thomas fulton and sen alvin of stratford mr and mrs v woodrow and son gary of tor onto called on mr sad mrs k g tarr saturday afteracon the owner of the large spacious dwelling in gormley ontario which has for the past five years been the home of the ontario bible school will immediately upon the termina tion of the present semister take steps to convert this dwelling into a benevolent rest home the lord willing a short time will be re quired for redecorating also for a few necessary changes which will have to be made my interests have for a number of years been equally divided between these two enterprises but my con victions are such that i have reason to believe the time has arrived to make this change and i am fully convinced god makes no mistake in his leadings it only remains for us to will to do his will i am well aware friends that our govern ment has provided an institution for the unfortunate citizens of our land but this gormley undertaking is due to a revelation given me with regard to the need of a church home certainly we appreciate these efforts put forth by those in authority but as i view the situa tion we as christians who consti tute the true church of god regardless of what denominational name we may be known by have a double obligation luke 2025 commands that we render unto caesar the things that be caesars and unto god the things which be gods we are not authorized to demand of the government that which the lord hath enjoined upon the church therefore we do well to consider such scriptures as matt 253146 psa 4113 luke 638 2nd cor 96 and 7 and many more might be mentioned it has been a blessed privilege friends for me to have been associated in a small measure at least with the work of the bible school and i feel the efforts put forth by me have been small in comparison to the blessings received in a spiritual way i listen to the testimonies of many others who like wise have derived great benefits i am made to feel eternity alone will reveal the result we are looking forward with joy ful anticipation to having a more modern and adequate building erected before the next school semis ter now friends i deem it just as great a blessing to minister to ths needy and infirm while not all are deprived of material blessings of life we believe there are those who will apprecfate the comforts of a quiet restful home at any raw suffice to say it will be undenomin ational open to any one who will have respect to the rules and regu lations adopted persons wishing to associate themselves with the same if you should desire fuller in formation you may call personally or write to the proprietress who will be pleased to answer any inquiry i am launching this work friends through faith in the unfailing promises of gods word it is not my purpose to beg but merely to say should any one feel you would like to share the blessings of such an undertaking your contributions will be sincerely appreciated mrs clara wideman gormley ontario resident of stouffville for twenty- five years and prior to that a resi dent of whitchurch twnship all her long life mrs john oxendale pass ed away at the brlerbush hospital here on thursday february 24 she would have celebrated her s2nd birthday had she lived until july next the late mrs oxendale whoso maiden name was that their only child john r oxen dale was born the father died a couple of years after retiring in stouffville where they had bought a house on rupert avenue from mrs latohford mr oxendales death is quite well re membered he having died as a re sult of a fall in the yard of his premises since that time the widow and her only son lived alone all that human kindness could do wis provided in the home by a thought ful son but when it became evident that special nursing was required sirs oxendale was removed to the hospital the funeral on sunday was at tended by many old friends and neighbors section last sunday almost demoralized the thermometers and consequently they couldnt tell the same story at altona it registered 10 below zero early monday morning at blooming- ton truman baxter reports 16 below and over in markham at archie flemings the big thermometor said it was 20 below however a d bruce has a conservative little register under a veranda and it told a story of only 6 below anyone will agree that it felt 20 below with that terrific wind twentyfcur hours before it was nice and spring like the blizzard which camo with the cold blocked a few roads in places and travellers who came out from the city early sunday anticipating a fine day were caught unawares plumbers had the busiest time this winter rushing hither and thither monday morning thawing pipes for householders for a few hours the weather certainly must have felt just like it would at the north or south pole and some folk thought it was even colder here in stouffville however the poles are not the coldest places on earth a town in siberia known as werchojansk holds the record here the temperature often falls as low as so below zero and has gone as low as 956 the natives of this town live in crude wooden huts with windows of thin ice cemented in place by pouring on water which freezes quickly around the edges walking in such cold air causes the breath to freeze falling to the ground in a white powder losing only one game in the en tire season aurora jubilee juniors romped home with the championship on monday night defeating east york 85 for the second game of the finals taking the round 1610 aurora really piled up a creditable record winning thirteen games and losing but one although the jubilees showed a greater margin over east york then they did over stouffville the toronto club put up a game fight in the two playoff games and displayed some mighty fine hockey in the first of the finals penalties were a jinx for the yorkers aurora taking a three goal lead against them when they were two men short while in the second contest the yonge street team showed a clear- cut edge on the play aurora will now meet lindsay if that team are successful in putting out east tor onto harper farm sold g00dw00d retain the cup taking two straight falls out of uxbridge 62 and 21 goodwood have captured the intercommunity league mug once more the red- shirts have yet to lose a game
