announcement by hon p m dewau minister of agriculture of appointments and changes in- the ontario dept of agriculture are of particular- inter est to the people of whitchurch ami york comity the many friends- made by j c steekley while serving the county so capably as agricul tural representative from 1911 to 1922 will be delighted to learn thai jatk has received a welltdeserved promotion having been appointed to superintendent of the experimental farm at ridgetown succeeding w r reek who was recently appointed deputyminister of agriculture mr steekley left york county in the fall of 1922 on being appointed associate professor of animal hus bandry at the ontario agricultural college guelph taking charge on the death of prof wade toole prof steekley enlarged and developed the work of the live stock department at the college in research and herd improvement some three years ago prof steekley was transferred to brant- ford to represent the dept of agri culture there and this paper joins his many friends in congratulating a native son of york on his recent appointment imr steekley was born in whit church township and farmed at bethesda his father had lived retir ed in stouffville for some yers and passed away in october of this year many of the young farmers of today attended school fair and short courses under his direction or were members of his live stock judging teams many of which won provincial honors mr steekley was succeeded here by r j rogers christmas globe mail as christmas day falls on satur day there will be no issue of toron to evening papers from friday night will enable us to better estimate me number of extra papers required remember this is the last issue of any daily until the following mon day evening liquor seized at jail farm two are arrested it will undoubtedly be a dry christmas at the langstaft jail farm but not because certain in dividuals didnt try tipped off that liquor was to be brought into the jail farm guards were stationed at the rum runners rendezvous a barn on the jail farm grounds a car drove up two men got out and headed towards the trap they were immediate sur rounded by guards and quickly overpowered in their overcoat pockets were found two bottles of whisky in the meanwhile the car and a third man continued up the aide lane at the rear of the jail out buildings and turned back to pick up his two associates seeing ills path blocked by guards he headed the vehicle straight at them the guards leaped out of the way of the roaring vehicle as it forced an open ing ou the roadway it bended southward under a fusilade of bullets four shots were fired by guards at the disappearing auto- and one is believed to have hit its mark jail officials expect an early arrest to day of the driver the two men captured by the guards gave their names as david edward and john fraser they were held at the jail farm on charges of vagrancy and are scheduled g appear in county police coiirb guards trailed the fleeing car as far south as aglncourt all subur ban and toronto police wore noti fied and main arteries leading into the city were blocked within a few minutes residents on church street are incensed over the action of certain hoys who have mutilated a good number of the beautiful shade trees the lads we are told carried a hatchet and slashed into a number of treeswhlch will mark them for all time to come if it does not do more serious harm by killing a few wo have been asked to mention tho matter that parents may warn their children about the seriousness of this offense lions club under consideration in stouffville strong list of officers is selected at meeting r hunters are fined tor poaching in markham proposed organization name jr hodgins as first presi dent dr ball will tame the brutes and blake sanders tail twister a branch of the lions club an international association was form ed in stouffville on friday evening when a representative number of citizens assembled in the municipal hall to hear organizer irwin judg ing by the standing of the citizens the organizer succeeded in interest ing in this new undertaking tha lions are in for a good time and should prove a distince asset to the community while twenty members are required to sign up befor organization is complete we are told that there is excellent prospect of this number joining before tho first regular meeting along about the middle of january the offices to be filled are much like those of any othar orgnniaation excepting that one allotted to mr blake sanders he is to he the tall twister th- duties of which we will is to promote intelligence liberty the nation- and safety all laudible objects this paper has for a ong time recommended the formation of some association that would nave for its object the promotion of the business welfare of stouffville and serve as a sort of backing for the municipal council who would often welcome the support of some in fluential organization in the pro motion of some scheme for rhe advancement of the community at large if the lions club can take in sufficient scope to do this then there is a place and need for them in the village and we are told that they can and will interest them selves in local undertakings the annual fee was set at 40 payable half yearly in advance initiation tee is 1000 four lions from bradford attend ed the meeting they reported that the membership fee covered most of the yearly expenses excepting ho cost of suppers held twice a month other funds were raised through theatre parties and other activities president rutherford of bradford offered to send over a couple of loads to provide a program for charter night to which ladies are to he in vited the first fine to be registered un der the new game protection act recently invoked in the township of markham was made this week when magistrate keith in county court imposed 10 and costs on four hunters picked up in the muni cipality by deputy game warden stiver and harper the hunters were carrying fire arms and were on a shooting exped ition when the officers got themthey had no license for tho guns or for shooting rabbits in the municipality and were forced to pay 20 each to cover costs of the court it has been said that the recent ly enacted game law for markham township would never be obeyed and that it lacked teeth well there are now four toronto men who will not agree with this for they have felt the teeth andttheir pocket books have felt a drain no doubt f- bailiff charged a police court action has been entered against edward wurm bailiff charging him with common assault when he entered the home of isaac meyers lot 20 con 10 pre sumably to make a seizure mrs meyers attempted to obstruct the officer at the door and she charges him with assault in attempting to enter the home the case is slated for county police court on monday december 27 at 10 oclock last rites performed a large concourse of old friends attended the funeral of the late mrs matthew timbers on thursday after noon from the home of her daughter mrs f mortson lot 5 concession 8 whitchurch the public service was held in the dickson hill mbc church where the pastor rev w brown took charge being assisted by rev mr bailey pastor of the friends church at armadale where mrs timbers attended and had membership years ago the pall hearers were all nephews being messrs john and ed timbers john roberts who is said to have been removed from the- waterloo district and dumped onto the district of north york because such strong objection to him was taken in the waterloo inspectorate is again in hot water last week a protest meeting was called of trustees of the north york inspectorate when a strong protest was said to have been registered against what is termed unjust criti cism hurled by the inspector at cer tain teachers in markham vaugban and whitchurch townships the member for north york morgan baker attended tho meeting while the deputy minister ot edu cation promised a full investigation would be made in view of the trouble this inspector is reported to have had prior to being ent into north york where ample mater ial could have been found locally for the position it shouldnt take the deputy minister long to arrive at a decision in the matter police force is incr b two following in the footsteps of his father who for 25 years was a mem ber of the york county police force william myers jr of mimico was appointed a county constable by the warden and commissioners at a special meeting yesterday one other appointment was also made by the commission aubrey fleury who for the past ten years has been town constable of aurora was assigned as county constable for whitchurch aurora and king tbwnship areas a third appointment for the new market area is contemplated by tne commissioners but this is not ex pected to take place until some timo later william myers will be the youngest member on the county force having just reached his 21st birthday his father the late de tective myers was one of the best liked officers on the county force and the young man is entering a service for which he has been well trained b appletons four nephews and five christinas day there was a very good run of fowl brought in and what was lacking in quantity certainly was made up in quality however probably because many farmers had not orought their poultry up to the required fatness so far before the anticipated time for killing or because of i the stronger drawing cards presented by neighboring town the crowd and the amount of poultry offered was decidedly down in comparison to other years chickens geese and ducks form ed the biggest offering in poultry with quite a nice lot of turkey chickens were low at 20 cents per pound for choice fowl while gee3e rose from 16 cents to 18 and 20 be fore the close of the market twea- tyeight cents and 30 cents was be ing offered for turkeys with sever al lots of choice birds selling at 35 cents per pound mostly to house holders eggs were 29c for grade a whitchurch pay in 44000 tax payers of the township ot whitchurch contributed to tho municipal coffers up to dec 15 over 44000 collector r e rat- cliff announced on saturday this leaves a balance outstanding on tho 1937 roll ot approximately 18000 against which there will be sub stantial payment by the first of tho new year it is difficult to compare the man ner in which taxes were paid this year as against 1936 the 1937 roll has a grand total of around 62000 whereas in 1936 the taxes totalled 70000 y the toronto and north york hunt collection for home of her daughter mrs v u heming 71 duplex avenue she was 96 year3 of age mrs hunter horn in aberden- shire scotland left her birthplace with her parents at the age of 16 years for canada they
