whitchurch township ratepayers will be handed a substantial reduc tion in municipal taxes this fall according to the bylaw which was enacted on thursday evening setting the various rates for 1938 there will be a total reduction ot 3 mills or a sum of money approxi mate to 7500 this showing i3 accomplished by a general reduc tion in the tax rate ot two and a half mills while at the same time the council has saved for the tax payers the onemill subsidy provided by the ontario government instead of passing on this subsidy a good many municipalities spent that much more money and the direct benefit to the tax payer was lost in the case of whitchurch however the tax bill will indicate a substantial saving the council held a three hour special session chiefly to consider the tax situation when the follow ing rates were struck on an assess ment ot 2485374 county rate 8 mills to riise 2108105 high school levy 2 mills to riise 490043 township general rate 7 mill to raise 1926165 relief 14 mill to raise 62144 the public school rates will varv according to the sections but most sections are about the same as other years the township debt ot around 35000 is about offset by unpaid taxes and it was held that the ra es struck for this year might leave a snug balance which could be applied against this overdraft the general rate is down this year as compared with 1936 by 1 mills while the county rate is low er by one mill this reduction plus the passing on of the government subsidy to the taxpayer wll be well received by the ratepayers was the belief of reeve earl toole who himself mov ed the reduction in the genral town ship rate when council was in committee on the bylaw it is the largest general tax re duction accomplished by any muni cipality in the county this year two bylaws providing for the re tirement over a period of years of monies owing the schools and the clergy reserve as put into effect last year were repealed at this meeting constable john williamson com plained to council against the con duct of the new court at new market i cant get justice there declared the cop who admitted that almost every case he took to the new court had been lost another com plaint was that the newmarket court has so far failed to remit to the township the municipalitys share of fines collected fish and chips smelly ben spence fish and chip man from wilcox lake lodged a strong protest against the manner in which his booth at the lake had been clos ed he held that the cop clampod down on him right in the midst of his saturday trade and left him with a pile of fish and grease to go bad complaints had been filed to the effect that the place had a had odor and the moh therefore declared it a public nuisance which resulted in its being closed iwigwag erection is under way material is being placed on the ground tor the wigwag signal to be installed at the cnr crossing on main street the outfit will cost 2400 and will be paid for by the dominion government and toronto york road commission with a small contribution of not over 225 from the village since trains have run over this crossing for the past 60 years there has been but one fatal accident and a great many minor mishaps time and again per sons have been hit by trains but somehow they always escaped seri ous injury and death the one fatal accident was the death ot young william miller brother of the late frank miller hotelkeeper the lad 15 had poor hearing and standing on the tracks failed to hear a freight train backing up slowly this was 45 years ago and in those days trains were allowed to backup without the presentday precaution of having a trainman standing on guard the installation of the wigwag will be a safeguard to all future traffic which is steadily increasing over our main
