week against trusting strangers who are canvassing the farming areas comes to light a rather unfortunate case of what looks like a wholesale swindle right here in stouffville a gentleman who spent several weeks in town representing himself as an agent for automobile insur ance sold a dozen or two policies at 5 each getting the cash in each case and on tuesday it came to light that he was not the companys agent at all one purchaser told the tribune that he wrote the company asking for tho shield which the agent promised to send for the front of his car information to hand tues day morning indicated that the agent in question was not acting tor them and the company advised th wouldbe purchaser of insurance to see the police and have the sales man apprehended every season similar circum stances of local people being swind led come to light and the wonder is that strangers continue to get casli from the pockets of farmers or townspeople so easily this agent the insurance agent used the name of s local garage and had a local man accompanying him most of the timel which gave his transactions an air of security again we say it i3 better not to trust your money with strangers for what you can buy at home just as well the presence of a gobetween may bo no guarantee and the loca person is getting a rakeoff or he 01 she would not be on hand anyway the gobetween may be taken in canadian national agent at stouffville after being here for nearly three years and after 43 years in the service of the company mr and mrs preston are likely to return to belleville no employee is allowed to serve after he reaches the age of 65 and for this reason mr preston has been looking forward to his retire ment at this time it is unofficially reported that the delay in nameing a it is still nicer to get back home is we gather something of the thought dr ira freel had in mind when he told us that he had motored 500 miles in a single day on the last leg of their journey from mississippi district where the doctor and mrs freel spent the winter they were accompanied by miss ada robinson the travellers reached home tired of course hut feeling better for the change ot climate during the past few months mrs freel stood the journey home in grand style al though she is looked on as the in valid of the household since she met with the accident three years ago in which she suffered a fractur ed limb coming up through southern alabama we noted that our color ed brethren had solved the trans portation problem by hitching a cow to a democrat said the doctor in settling dowuto talk of the holi day in the south owing to flood damages we were detoured in ken tucky and unexpectedly landed in to indiana it was noticeable around lawreueeburg near cincinatti that the ohio is only protected here by a very high bank and naturally when the earth gave way from the terrific pressure of the mounting stream the whole community wa3 washed away and so far the houses have never been replaced the gar age man calmly told us that the houses had never came back the ground is studded with tents ahd the earth is wet and unattractive it is noticeable that the farther south one goes the damper tha atmosphere and you necessarily feel the cold more forty degrees above in mississippi is as cold to us as zero weather in stouffville or 30 below in saskatchewan the dreamy warm deep south of the gulf of mexico at biloxi miss where the freels made their headquarters is a splendid place for a holiday here you meet the southern men with their politeness courtesy and ever ready quip or helpful information when wood- row wilson once went to biloxi for a rest he was told that he went o the right place as rest was biloxis chief industry dr freel attended a meeting of the southern surgical association at edgewater gulf he noted a long discussion on cancer its still a mystery with the knife xray and radium the only help mississippi is unique it is strong ly prohibition yet saloons aro plentiful with long bars and slot machines everywhere they pay a tax to the state the visitors aro impressed with the bright green lawns from the memphys rye just as our northern grain tho fairways of the golf course aro dry and brown but tho greens are a fresh bright green anil a special variety of rye 3 sown on them in tho fall rain in the gulf ot mexico comes down in torrents and continues 48 hours at a timo but on going jut after the deluge one is greeted with only a few puddles the sandy earth having absorbed tho moisture so quickly and draining it into the sea dew drops from the roof tops at evening timo much as if a light shower had fallen tho common ex pression is pretty day pretty weather whereas with we can adians it is fine day fine weather one is not long at biloxi before he or she becomes familiar with oysters oyster and shrimp factories are maintained and one is painfully aware of their proximity by the aroma women workers receive a nickle a bucket for shucking out the oysters with their deft fingers and a sharp knife they are paid on the spot as they hand their bucket of oysers gumbo soup is a popular dish on the gulf coast throw in a few oysters a few shrimp fish butressed with rice and some okra not too difficult to swallow and some times you get away with it but one is not safe un til the third day mosquitoes and then some the pests have learned not to sing so they can swoop down on one and get in their deadly work ere thei presence is discovered the adja cent marshes make good breeding ground this was partly controlled at one time by alroplanes spreading oil but the cost is said to have been too much and the pests are having their own way saturday is the day for crowds just as it is in stouffville only the people are different here aro the negro girls with their kinky hair waxed out straight and white girls with their waved one ancient dame with callico apron and sun bonnet white stood out in the crowd she was selling pralins peccans and brown sugar syrup a great delicacy and much appreciated by fat men we see a turpentine nigger in rags stick and rheumatism all good natured and jostling one another in the crowds any visitor to the gulf is impress ed with the sea wall it runs 40 miles and is made up of slopln steps up from the water this keeps the tide from washing away the picturesque highway our jamos with his farmer instinct marvelled at the time they cut hay on febr- ary 1st with tree3 in blossom and thus things to him seemed upside down the visitor is naturally interest ed in the bellinggrath gardens in the isle au alec elowa river in alabama it is a veritable fairy region here axe thousands of rose bushes japonica white and red in abundance and other beautiful flowers in all their glory and pro fusion one shrub is 110 years old and is still going strong in fact one can scarcely describe the beauty of this place our party took more than two hours following the vari ous trails all bordered by brilliant flowers and lined with trees there is a fast rushing river to add to tho beauty of this fairy land that news item in the tribune about the likelihood ot ontario farmors starting banana plantations because of the warm weather this winter no doubt started the mississippi on tho run dr preel was hesitant about say ing much aftout tbe nuisance taxes in the mississippi district as it might catch on in ontario if the politicians got to hear of them how ever ho explained that you aro forc ed to purchase tokens one cent buys ton and you must put up one of these with each purchase of flvo cents being equivalent to 2 per cent a sample has been left at tho office of the tribune dr freel thought the token made a twoway grab added as it is to the regular taxes we have reserved for a future issue observations made by dr freel on historic places of inter est and wo will tell our readers just what he said on this and other things of interest at a later date oconner drive in york township george lukan of scarboro junction sued john white of the 6th con cession markham for 7400 for damages to his car and injuries to his wife white denied liability and counterclaimed for 3500 for dam ages to his car the plaintiff stated in his evi dence that he was travelling in the north traffic lane leading into tor onto the defendant contended that the plaintiff was travelling in the centre lane and he was travelling in a northerly direction in the south traffic lane and just as the plaintiff was passing him he turned his car into that ot the defendant marks on the south painted line convinced the court that the accident happen ed as described by the defendant and dismissed the plaintiffs claim and gave the defendant judgment on his counterclaim with costs and witness fees mr deroche of toronto for plaintiff f l button kc for defendant may ban sale of unpasteurized milk at a meeting of the stouffville board of health last week it was decided to ask the village council to pass a bylaw forbidding the sale of raw or unpasteurized milk to the householders for daily consumption dr saugster pointed out that the ontario department of health has this village in the category of those which had adopted this advanced legislation but while there is no such bylaw in existence only pasteurized milk was being sold by the two local dairies he recommend ed to tho board that this be made absolute it is likely that the muni cipal council wilt approve ot tho suggestion and take steps to enact such a bylaw the board of health consists ot the moh dr sangster the reeve a e weldon
