service charge second slight reduction in rates also announced for stouffville this year record entry at i stouffville honors one plowing match of its chief builders although the hydro electric rates were reduced early this year the commission in toronto has submitted still another rate for stouftville which embodies a slight reduction in the cost of current to the customer and wipes out entirely the service charge to domestic con sumers which is 33c per month for a twowire service and ggc for a threewire service the actual result ot the present rates if adopted by the local council at their next session will be a saving of around s0o spread among all the custom ers in town the present charge of 3c per kw for the first 50 hours is to be advanced to 3c for the first go hours and the second rate will be 11c per kw with the discontinu ance of the service charge this is still held to be a lower rate the commercial rate now 3c per kw for the hist 100 hours is re duced to 2s for the first 100 hours hut the service charge of course cannot be cut off as in the case of domestic users the power rate remains the same as heretofore the usual minimum bill of 2 per two months will be continued as little reduction can be made for the smaller customer who does not use more than 25e worth of current a week it costs that amount to service him and carry the account on the books folks who get the reduction in hydro rates are those who make the greatest use of the system it is now cheaper than coal oil for cook ing and with this latest reduction still more appliances should be placed in local homes the new rates will become effec tive so soon as they are adapted by the municipal council business suspended during the funeral service for the late r j daley who passed away in edmonton pioneer alberta mr daley joined the staff of the alberta government immi gration and colonization depart ment retiring from this work ig years ago he devoted his attention to the development of a tract of land which lie acquired for himself it was the management of the exten sive holdings that prevented his cherished hope of retiring in stouffville being realized concerning his active days in stouffville which seemed to date from the time of the fire which de stroyed the old hotel property at the corner of main and church streets in 1s78 records in our possession state that mr daley pur chased main street land just west of church street where good stores now stand and here he erected one of the largest business blocks yet built in the village at that time in 1ss5 he erected at the corner of main and market streets on the site of the present post ollice a large hall which also served as a market place where he started a curling and skating rink in the base ment the market grew to he one of the largest in the county and old- timers recall the crowded streets of market day mr daley carried on a large and successful mercantile business in 1891 when he accepted the posi tion of general agent for the sun life assurance co for outario and vork counties he also conducted a lire insurance and real estate branch with this business for which the ollice was in his large hall during 1s92 and 1s93 mr daley held the position of superintendent of the royal templars society for the province of ontario aud was an ardent and effective temperance worker he believed in clean sport and did his part to provide it thus the skating rink in 1s91 he erected a large and costly home for himself at the corner of main street and obrien avenue now owned by dr ss ball prior to this he built the brick immediately to the south ot the methodist church mr daleys interest and faith in the town was also shown by the fact that he purchased and divided some 150 building lots and opened several new streets he served as reeve for three years and was active in the formation of the old mechanics institute various socie ties as well as the fire brigade and the creamery co of which he was one of the largest shareholders he fought hard for the bylaw which gave us our water system married at stouffville in 1875 mr and mrs daley celebrated their gist wedding anniversary last month mrs daleys that the funeral service and last rites be conducted by rev dr mitchell for professor mitchell had been pastor of the deceased while resident in edmonton and had known him since boyhood out of respect to the memory of the deceased reeve sanders requested business places to suspend operations during the time of the service while the town bell tolled as the funeral cort ege left the united church for stouffville cemetery revl e atkinson pastor of the church assisted in the service while a quartette number was given by messrs j l barrett r leslie mrs leslie and mrs kellington pall hearers were grandchildren dr mitchell spoke of two signifi cant attitudes in life namely fear and faith the bible he said had many admonitions about fear chief of which are disease poverty and death each of which he briefly elaborated on he liked faith better because it had a larger measure of probability and because it gets more lovely things out of lite and brings more to life r j daley exemplified this attitude to lite more than any other man i ever met was the sweeping statement of this thoughtful speaker he eulogized him as the most loyal citizen tho village ever sent into the world and said the speaker he was not only a great believer in men but a believer in god he was a churchman and a great temperance worker he concluded dr mitchell said that he seldom said anything about the dead but ho said i wanted to say these things mountain mines ltd elected officers company of boon days of 1s9s has been inactive for long years cash in treasury bought western cattle a carload of western cattle
