alternative but to pass the bylaw provided the petition is in order and sufficiently signed this they believe has been done but will be reported on the committee were asked to con fer with the farmers located with- in the village limits and make some agreement regarding the assessment on tnat land within the said limits those behind tho movement are most anxious to get started at once and the council have agreed to meet them before the next regular meeting to complete necessary de tails at a spirited and enthusiastic public meeting called at the town ship hall at goodwood last wed nesday night warden john low of uxbridge told the gathering that if the township of uxbridge went about it in the proper manner it was his opinion that they could get a hard top laid on the road from goodwood to lincolnville next year i and that had proper representation been made a year ago the road might have been laid now the warden defended himself against what he termed as unwarranted attacks on his attitude toward the stouffville road first of all let me tell you men here that i represent the town of uxbridge not the township but when i am at county council i re present tho township also if you will look over the county minutes the warden continued you will see that i am responsible for you getting the hard top you now have in the village of goodwood i did this be cause i felt it was the thin edge of the wedge toward a hard surfaced road from uxbridge to stouffville mr low said he had done as much as any man for the good of the stouffville road the trouble with the enthusiasts for a betler road through goodwood was that they had been putting the cart before the horse he said if you want a hard top road get into the right channel and i think you will get it said the speaker send ing down petitions to the county council will get you nowhere you must act through your township council which represents your municipalityt goodwood is only part of the township and has no more standing before the county than siloam or any other hamlet said mr low the speaker said the county commissioners intended looking over the stouffville road right away and he expected to accompany them he would do everything he could to impress on them the need for a different type top on this thoroughfare uxbridge township he explained paid in county taxation for roads a little more than 2000 there had been spent over double this amount and the road is now up to the standard which entitled the county to a government drawback on the work done on it in future this didnt look as if it had been entirely neglected he said the warden opened his remarks protest amount of gravel laid on wliitchurch townlino ward the improvement or hard top on this piece of county road he re minded the meeting that his position as warden called for his interest in perhaps many roads because he campaigned for a government highway east to west was no reason for the southern people to curse the warden uxbridge town he said are out to get a paved road no matter how or where it comes said mr low and i am behind that scheme every minute the crosscountry highway talked of has no relation ship to the stouffville road said he in closing with the assurance that ho would do what he could but warned that the ratepayers should follow the proper channel in making requests of their county body councillor owen davies acted as chairman and said it was a question of whether uxbridge should ask for j a government highway or a county road hard topped although he and the warden had had many a wordy battle he wanted to say that the warden had done some good work and they were great friends even when looking crosseyed at each other he gave mr low credit fow building roads around his own municipality thats where he be longs and i give him credit in looking after the people who elected him said the chairman among those called on to say a few words were dr darling coun cillor r ashenhurst j f reid geo todd jack rae councillor weldon of stouffville dr sangster dr ira preel a v nolan j r hodgins reeve n rae of whitchurch and others all of whom wanted to see a hard top road from goodwood to lincolnville councillor weldon claimed that york county was prepared to hard top the 10th concession from lin colnville to stouffvllle to complete the job as soon as ontario county showed signs of doing something by unanimous vote of all ux bridge township ratepayers present a committee composed of george todd john rae and howard harper were authorized to wait on the uxbridge township council and pray them to take immediate slops to make the desires of the ratepay ers known about this road down at county council and that they ask council to make a formal request of the 1936 road commission of the county to hard top the stouffville road or any part of it in 1937 their approval this year would help to get the job done in 1937 it was said stouffville mennonite church rev i brubacker pastor sunday october
