return game will bo played here this friday evening the bmc entertained the mission band at its monthly meet ing held at the home of mrs f ward on tuesday afternoon mrs h johnson of the united church was guest speaker of the meeting the roadway from ballantrae circuling musselman3 lake is de scribed as intolerable by president evans of the ratepayers associa tion and aiconcerted effort is on foot to have a hard top built from ballantrae around the south side of the lake andback to ballantrae by the north shore and sideroad it is pointed out by the association and other residents that three or four hundred dollars is spent every year for oil plus a large outlay tor road- work but in spite of all this the road is worse than the rocky road to dublin a petition may be circulated but in any event the ratepayers are tak ing the matter up nnd will request the whitchurch township council to do something it is proposed that the municipal provincial and domin ion authorities link together inbear- ing the cost of this piece of road approximately 3 12 miles around the ratepayers albout the lake according to mr evans are willing j to bear their share of the cost and with this offer they intend to dangle the matter before the authorities the road is impossible so long as it remains a gravel top but mr evans commended the members of the council for their effort in doing what they could to keep tne road in re pair from musselmans lake to stouffville via the 9th concession is equally difficult to maintain owing to the heavy traffic and here again something of a permanent nature would be a paying proposition the argument against a hard top sur face for the 9th is that the traffic can travel along the 8th but the residents on the 9th do not see it that way a decision was handed out this week in the appeal for tax exemp tion on the toronto mens hostel farm at vandorf against the town ship of whitchurch granting full exemption to the hostel which had been tax tree for years but which was assessed this spring by the local assessor in his decision his honor judge barton stated that he could not find any change in the act since the late judge widdifield rendered a judgment on an appeal three years ago and which was found at the time to be tax free under section 9 sub section 4 of the assessment act it was pointed out before tlie appeal court that the farm rents for 600 per year for around 300 acres and it was contended that a lower rental would obtain if the tenant had taxes to pay therefore it was sought to show that the vanos- trand estate owner of the property benefits from the tax exemption and not the toronto mens hostel his honor however was in fluenced by the strict wording of the assessment act exempting all philanthropic institutions from local taxes and accordingly rendered judgment mr harry naughton act ed as legal representative for whitchurch the appeal of the marylake agri cultural school and farm settle ment in king was equally success ful in a written judgment handed down in county court which ruled that it be nonassessable for taxation by the township of king the appellant in the appeal stat ed that it was a nonprofit organiza tion under the provision of the ontario companies act and the ob ject of the institution was to re establish families of persons as self supporting economic units and to provide instruction in farming
