research work here this week at the 97th annual meeting of the amer can association for the advance ment of science one such invention was explained today by dr c g abbot secretary of the smithsonian institution aad authority on solar radiation who presented a steam engine which uses the suns rays in producing power at low cost low cost stressed the machine if manufactured on a large scale would be inexpen sive according to dr abbot who said its present cost was about 200 and if produced in any quantity this cost could he reduced to approxim ately 100 this is a substantial re duction in the cost of steampower machines there are three possible uses foi the machine he said these are for generating power for cooking and for evaporating liquids all of which could be done inexpensively in com parison with what it costs to do the same things today he asserted the machine has no moving mechanical parts how machino works a sixfoot concave aluminum mirror two feet wide garners in the suns rays and focuses them into a vaccum tube which runs parallel to it through a second inner tube coated with a reflecting material runs a black liquid chloridiphenyll heated to 188 degrees fahrenheit its boiling point by the focused light rays the liquid moves upward to deposit its boiling content into a reservoir although the idea of using the suns rays has been speculated upon and tried before dr abbots ma chine is reported to be four times as efficient as any other machine pre viously invented dr abbot declares that 15 per cent of the solar energy falling upon the mirror is converted into life conference twoparty system will break down held at newmarket and sponsored if the capitalistic system does not by headmaster jos mcculley of reproduce prosperity and that in the pickering college and ralph white york county agricultural repre sentative was attended by about 100 young people of the province on january 2 3 and 1 these conferences are designed to give education inspiration and recrea tion but their greatest value prob ably is that they cause young people to think together on some of the major problems of our time this year as usual there was an outstanding group of leaders head ed by jos mcculley himself ray mond booth minister of the society of friends toronto led discussions on problems of youth and pre sented a liberal christian point of view these discussions proved to be one of the most popular features of the conference which seems to dis close the fact that young people are deeply concerned about religion one of the most thought provok ing subjects dealt with was youth and war dr g stanley russell of deer park church toronto gave a stirring address in which lie de clared that there is a complete change in public opinion on this question in every walk of life there is a revolt against war because the truth of what it is and what it does is becoming known by the masses dr russell who was a chaplain in event of continued depression a socialist party will prosper or we may have a rise of fascism in the absence of miss agnes mcphail mp the ufo organizer for her con stituency was present and led a discussion the conservative and liberal viewpoint were also men tioned in several addresses the present system of voting was discussed and it was thought that in justice to all it would be possible for minority groups to be represented in our parliaments the point was stressed that the elector ate must become better informed on economic and political questions before we can expect to have the welfare of the people put above financial interests it may have been true in the past that every child that is born alive is either a little liberal or a little conserva tive it is certainly true that there has been a great deal of emotion mixed with politics but it was suggested that we put clear think ing in its place the agricola study clubs were explained by drummond wren who presents radio talks every satur day evening on all subjects of inter est to rural people these go along with material which is supplied to members of the clubs by the the last war shared the ideas of i university extension dept of tor militarists at that time but was forced to the position of becoming an extreme pacifist he now be lieves that war is mass butchery and that conscription is slavery we must look at it from the point of view of a christian acting as the prince of peace would have us act and being willing to take the consequences of being a conscient ious objector discussions showed that the young people are interested in organized efforts for peace it was the general opinion that the league of nations is not the success which it ought to be it is not going all the way but it is going our way and is the only international organization which is trying to keep peace dr russell urged his large audience to do everything in their power to create public sentiment for peace saying that a christians business is to make war impossible in the political realm professor frank underbill spoke on the canadian political scene giving a history of the twoparty system used onto university which will provide further information a representative of the child rens aid society told of the fine piece of social service work which is being done by york countys only non denominational non partisan charity organization mrs raymond booth gave instruction in handi craft work on looms and rudy renzius swedish artist and crafts man demonstrated the making of pewter ware in the school craft shop where there is also a fine woodworking department members of the madsen gymnas tic school in toronto demonstrated their danish gymnastics and folk games which were also participated in by those interested several staff members of the college assisted in the program by lecturing on canadian business and the prim ary producer and other economie problems especially confronting rural people and miss ethel chap man of the institutes branch spoke on is there a rural culture altogether the programme was a was designed it is expected taat aurora miss l carroll and mr there will be another community john carroll with
