of the money w p mulock member for north york opposed in parliament a vote of 1000000 for the construction of a tunnel un der the western gap of toronto harbour this public works employ ment bill is still before the house and col mulocks opposition is in the opinion of the tribune well founded so long as thousands of human beings are living in hovels and dens unfit for man right in toronto there is no use saying that we are trying to block the expendi ture of this money in the city of toronto because that statement would not be correct mr imulock said we are quite satisfied to see money spent in that city it it is spent for useful purposes if the government would see fit to use the money ior slum clearances lion members of this side would support it supporting mr mulocks conten tion that slum clearance would be a better way to spend the money in toronto ross gray liberal member for lambton read from the housing report of dr h a bruce lieutenantgovernor as fol lows our survey of toronto housing conditions reveals that there are thousands of families living in houses which are insanitary ver minous and grossly overcrowded bad houses are not only a men ace they are active agents of de struction the committee is satis fied from its investigations and in quiries that they destroy happi ness health and life they destroy morality and family ties they destroy the basis of society itself by their destruction of selfrespect and their promotion of delinquency and crime goodbye to potato control ffssi tickets time tables and all coach travel information at anderson phone 158 how sleep comes is still a mystery to scientists a great many theories have been advanced to explain the riddle but none has been acceptable one theory explains that sleep comes somewhat in the manner ot pulling all the plugs out of a switchboard to stop all conversa tions the conduction pathways in the nervous system are broken by the refraction of small contact points between the neurones which are the conducting units that form the nervous system as generally expected the at tempt under the natural products marketing act to control potato marketing has been dropped at least so far as the old crop still be ing marketed is concerned whether this control is to be revived when the new 1935 crop starts movini remains to be seen observers with many years ex perience either in marketing or growing farm crops predict failure for the whole attempt at marketing control they point out that the farmer is an individualist he has in most cases scores of outlets for his products he may grow pota toes one year and beans or early vegetables the next he may sell to one man this fall and to some other person next year with some things he may not sell at all but feed his crops to livestock on his own farm he has practically no chance to con trol production with crops carrying four or five times in size from year to year above all the average farmer resents any sort ot inter ference in other words he would rather go to the devil in his own way than reach loftier heights un der direction so far in the abortive scheme t control potatoes no apparent gain was reaped by the grower whereas the honest wholesaler and retailei who tried to carry out official orders suffered considerable loss they loaded up with potatoes at the regular price only to find themselves shortcircuited by hucksters who had gone out into the country bought surplus spuds at low prices and bootlegged them in the towns and cities when half a dozen special ized manufacturers backed by ample tariff
