aspirants and all east york riding is keenly watching the contest for the honor of carrying the liberal banner the next federal election there are five candidates definite ly in the field and othrs have been mentioned as surprises for may srd but it is generally conceded tnat the candidate will he selected from among those who have already an nounced themselves and have been addressing meetings through the riding for several months at least four of the candidates express optimism and each of the four are willing to name a second third fourth and fifth choice but with the rank and file of liberal members few will do more than bet on their favorite candidates are by this time very well known and some have been in the limelight for many ears dennis mccarthy a former deputy reeve of the township and alexander mcgregor kc have both previously carried the liberal anrier in east york goldy flem- ng f w bayfield and james coughlin kc are newcomers in the east york election circles but mr coughlin was a candidate on several occasions in other consti tuencies respective candidate claims mr mccarthy and mr rayfielcl claim residency in the riding and although mr mcgregor does not live in east york he is probably one of the largest property owners in the township and has devoted much time in the interests of the taxpayers of the township be sides his personal ability his strong card is that he carried the load for the liberal party on two successive occasions over heavy roads when none other was in sight to do it reward for past favors is a just and strong card of mr mcgregors mr fleming for many years resided in the northern sections of the riding mr coughlin has been associated with east york affairs for many years as a builder and has been a strong advocate of de velopment along residential lines on several occasions he has taken a hand in the east york municipal election campaigns dennis mccarthy has been in the tinsmithing business for many years alex mcgregor is recognized as having attained- a high standing in the legal profession goldy flem ing is a progressive business man with considerable interest in sever al manufacturing concerns mr rayliell is a teacher lecturer and writer mr coughlin in addition to being a lawyer carries on a con siderable real estate development business all the candidates are strong in their advocancy of the liberal prin ciples and hopeful for the return of the liberal party at the next elec tion such popular planks as the equalization of the good things of life senate reform freer trade lower tariffs and all pin their faith on mackenzie king as canadas hope and allexpress confidence that in the event of their selection as standard bearer the liberals will be victorious in east york on election day the
