for more than four score years jile was born in december 1s52 on i the farm where he breathed his last and was therefore s2 years and four moms old j the deceased had always enjoy- ed reasonably good health up until almost the time of his demise and the end came as a gradual wearing out of the system although lie re tained his good physical appearance almost to the very last the late john yake it may be said never changed his abode from the parental farm during the long years intervening his birth and de mise excepting for a few years spent at highland creek he was one of eight children born to the late john yake and susan kester his wife the father died in 1900 and tlio mother in 1920 she was a daughter of one philip kester of the eight children born to the first john yako there is today living only abram who was second in line and who is now 91 years old and jacob living in the east end of stouffville and one time jeweler of tlits village jacob was the second to last son and john who died on sunday was third to last born when a young man john yake about whom this sketch is written united in marriage with christina boyer who predeceased him about ten years to their union three children were born all of whom survive the parents they are wes ley at home miss mina also at home and mary mrs harvey tay lor of highland creek mrs taylor has been at home for a couple of weeks assisting to nurse her father during his last and final illness a staunch liberal john yake was ardent supporter of all liberal principles and never departed from them the funeral on wednesday after noon of this week was from the late home to stouffville cemetery for interment rev e morton conduct ed the service at the home and graveside when all that was mortal of this sturdy type of progressive of mr and mrs william bell pine grove and mr clarence fredrick jones son of mr and mrs george jones goodwood the bride was attended by miss mary reesor while the groom was supported by his brother gordon jones after returning to the brides home a dainty luncheon was served only tho immediate families being present on their return from a short honey moon mr and mrs jones will reside on the fourth of uxbridge on mho ii iroach farm best wishes for a happy and successful life on thursday morning march 14th mr frank j barkey passed away at his home on north broad way street tilsonburg after s lengthy illness he was in his 67th year it was the second death in the family within a week mrs barkey having been laid to rest the thurs day previous deceased was a well known and highly respected citizen born at green river pickering township and had been a continu ous resident of tilsonburg for 51 years in 1ss9 his father the late david barkey purchased the tilson burg electric light plant and later handed the business over to his two sons frank and william who carried on until the advent of hydro deceased was an accomplish ed musician and organized and directed a brass band at green river at the age of 16 years and when he moved to tilsonburg assisted in the organization of the odd fellows band later the citizens band act ing as leader for over 19 years he was a charter member of the maccabees and also a member of otter lodge no 50 ioof mr i barkey was an adherent of st an drews presbyterian church surviv ing are one sister mrs w a mc- xeilly of brooklyn ont and a bro ther william of tilsonburg two aunts imrs john blair and miss susan barkey and one uncle abram barkey all of markham also many cousins in markham and whitchurch townships the late frank barkeys mother was a sister of seneca bakers mother while his father was a brother of imrs malcolm haulers father the funeral was held at his late lesidence on saturday afternoon and was very largely attended many relatives and friends from a distance being present to pay their last tri bute of respect to his memory the service was conducted by rev robert bruce and the pallbearers- were the same as officiated last week when mr w f ratcliff springhurst farm just north of ringwood sold fortyeight head of prime beef cattle for export or the united states market the sale price was 720 per cwt pounds tho highest obtained here for more than five years for cattle of this type and breed fred ward of claremont was the purchaser although a dozen promi nent buyers were on hand at the ratcliff farm ready to bid the price is regarded as high and will average around 85 per head as messrs a d bruce and a v nolan members of the york county childrens aid society attended a meeting of this organization at tho county buildings on adelaide street last thursday afternoon later the society members 14 were guests of the toronto childrens aid at the granite club where lunch was served and an admirable address heard from mr burn w- heise an old stouffville boy who is attached to the welfare dept of the ontario government mr heise reviewed the history of this particular work since the late j j kelso undertook its re organization a new departure is the grading of societies in the province and closer supervision by the government tho grades run from a to e and draw- grants from 2000 for a grade a society to 100 for b grade york county starts out this year in e grade and a strong recommendation from hon david dolls department that we pep up the work of the organigation the newly reorganized recovering from the spell following a year of ill health which developed a dropsical condi tion imrs joseph mertens passed away on saturday morning on the farm just west of tho village where she had spent nearly all her 42 years of married lite mrs mertens was born on the second concession of uxbridge township her maiden name being emma hoover daughter of pioneer parents mr and mrs henry hoover she is the last of a family of five children as a girl she came to stouffville and was a tailoress in the shop of the late w b sanders in 1s93 she married joseph mertens tho couple having the- nuptial knot tied in toronto they settled on the mertens homestead where they spent practically all the intervening years to this union two daughters miss lmarjorio at home and ina mrs fletcher goudie survive to gether with the husband a woman of more than average hospitable instinct the mertens home was ever a rendezvous for friends and relatives and her reputation as a housewife was known far and near she had no superior in this and as evidence it may be pointed out that her make of butter always demanded a premium on the market in fact it has been sold privately and custom ers were retained for 25 years in town mrs imertens was a great lover of flowers a fact that is right ly endued in her daughter miss marjorie secretary of the local horticultural society thus the mer tens home garden is something to see each summer when in bloom on tuesday afternoon the funer al took place to stouffville cemetery following a private service at the house the remains were conveyed to the local mennonite church which was filled by sorrowing friends and lifelong acquaintances rev wm mover former pastor preached the funeral service in the absence of the pastor rev s cressman and rev s goudie both of whom were absent through illness the pall bearers were all relatives of the de ceased and the floral tributes were a silent testimony to the worth and respect of a devoted mother house wife wost of stouff ville the proceeds of which threo auctions totalled over 10000 spot cash tho steckley estate salo was one of these while the other two were just over in markham twp a few days later it is a fact that the total proceeds in cash from seven farm stock sales held in a short radius of stouffville during march brought in around 1s000 or 20000 five years ago all this would have been transacted on credit with many a heart acho before pay day but that is another matter the point wo arc most pleased about is that our farmers could muster 20000 bucks to buy miss margaret mcewan and miss dorothy shadwick were home on sunday mr and imrs baxter of toronto were visitors at batemans on sun day mrs robt mill who has been em- employed in the city during the winter arrived home tuesday we are pleased to report the gradual improvement of those in flicted with measles in this district our school was closed last friday owing to the illness of miss brown who we are glad to say is back
