was a matter of anxious conjecture as to whether or not that batch of bread would rise properly all of our baking is a scientific success our bread should be one of your standard family foods stouffville bakery bakers of stouffvllles popular bread we hear that dr ira freel left stouffville on feby 24 mrs freel a nurse and a chauffeur to spend a few months in st petersburg florida had a most pleasant trip south at least it was pleasant until the party left indianapolis when they encounter ed a little car trouble which delay ed the travellers for a considerable time the first day out of stouff ville they reached detroit making the next stop at indianapolis it was after leaving the latter place that something went wrong and the ser vices of a garage had to be engag ed long before this is published however the tourists will be safely settled on tampa bay in the orange state few men have retained the hardiness of manhood such as has abram hraymer of baker avenue last saturday he reached his s4th birthday and all week or most of it he was busy hauling logs with the team he tops the talest loads of hay that the wagon can safely draw in the fall season and in fact there seems to be no work too strenuous for him mr raymer is to be con gratulated on his physical condi tion at his advanced age all his senses are really good even his hearing being keen you can buy with confidence who in renewing her subscription last week from california says the home town paper arrives there monday each week even the washing is tempor arily held up while the head lines are scanned before work is re sumed mrs sanders says further we do not seem so far away from canada this winter as we have had friends from home calling on us these include mr and mrs fred willis of uxbridge mr willis was druggist at one time in stouffville mr and mrs c thomas of toron to also imiss vina hodgins one is always glad to meet friends from tho old home town concludes mrs sanders the sad news has reached town concerning the death of mrs bruels wife of mr charlie bruels of vernon bc and a former ring- wood boy and brother of mrs frank baker of stouffville mrs bruels passed away on february 21 leaving her husband two daughters and one son to mourn for a beloved wife and mother she was a port perry girl her maiden name being myrtle gibson friends of the family will regret to learn of the break in this family circle inter ment was made at vernon on february 25th prior to leaving stouffville for their new home at richmond hill the baptist congregation presented them with a lovely floor lamp at a social evening tendered them last week on the eve of their departure both mr and mrs smith have been untiring workers in the local congregation and they will be keenly missed mr smith is establishing a green house on yonge street the monthly meeting of the jr institute will he held on wednes day afternoon imarch 13 at the home of miss ruth walls miss e wallace from the department will be the speaker for the afternoon there will an irish contest con ducted by miss m mertens and a parade of old fashioned hats with date attacked current events by aliss alta fockler will conclude the programme social half hour is be ing arranged all welcome its all right to talk about the silly old goose but the one own ed by master elgin hastings at lemonvllle knows how to take care of hereself in a bad situation the other sunday the goose was miss ing and a thorough search over the farm failed to reveal its where abouts three nights and two days later the hired man cut holes in the ice on the small stream when lo tho old goose came out none ttia worse for her confinement the creek had frozen over and she be came a prisoner living in the small space between the water and the ice which has a habit of freezing so as to leave an air space over spring water markhams speedy junior group of hockey artists came to grief when they bumped into barrie in the playdown the neighboring lads looked good against the teams in this district gathered from towns land villages of a similar size but up against the kempenfeldt bay hockeyists where they have a popu lation of 7000 to choose from they didnt look so good well thats al ways the way markham had a snappy town team just the same and they deserve credit for the manner in which they forged ahead during the season stouffville was well represented to see the first game with barrie played at markham fri day evening the northerners won the round 2311 owing to the illness of their pastor rev s cressman the young people of the mennonlte church took charge of the evening service last sunday bringing out talent which may well be developed for the goneral benefit of the church at large gordon ramer of bloomington directed the service and gave a short address which was well prepared and delivered in a pleasing style miss mary lewis also gave a platform address in a manner becoming a professional i speaker harry stouffer read the lesson while the singing was led by mr lambert stouffer with miss bertha stouffer at the organ the whole service was an inspiration and revealed great possibilities among tho young people of this congregation one of our local girls suffered the loss of goods and cash to the value of 150 by thieves in toron to last week the victim is miss jessie walls rn supervisor on the surgery floor at the toronto east general hospital miss walls occupies quarters in the nurses residence at the rear of the hospital and by means of gaining entrance through a window a thief or thieves entered the building the other evening just before the nurses came off duty and made away with a good haul several of the girls in residence were victimized miss walls losing a ring valued as a keep sake and several other articles of jewelery as well as more than 70 in cash so far no one has been apprehended in connection with the matter but it is suggested that tho i robbery was committed by some- lone who had access to the general i movements of the nurses in resi- i denco the beautiful flowers which decked the chansel of the local baptist church last sunday morn ing wore the gift of mrs howard kelly of kingston and mrs gordon lunau of markham the flowers were given in memory of their mother ms william lewis who passed away one year ago or on the second of march 1934 this is a very touching and fitting way to commemorate such a sad event later the flowers were laid on the grave at the cemetery likewise in memory of her aged father who died in stouffville quite a number of years ago miss mary nicholson of toronto placed a beautiful bouquet of flowers on the chansel at the united church last sunday the late mr nicholson was a resident of the east end living just beyond the 10th concession line tests followed no doubt these reached the government and pro duced the conviction that it would be a very unwise step the minister of agriculture however is anxious that the grants be used solely for agricultural pur poses and has warned against the giving of harness horso races at the expense of the agricultural prize list this practice which is wide spread in the rural sections will not be tolerated the minister warns in some of the local fairs the speeding events are the principal attractions and are strongly sup ported as a means of increasing attendance says the canadian statesman bowmanville which adds they may have their place but the encouragement of that which makes tor improved condi tions was the purpose for which fairs were establised and for which they are continued and supported in too many places the prize list remains unchanged from year to year with the result that the pro fessional exhibitors gather in tho rewards to such an extent that competition in some of the classes practically disappears this is par ticularly so in the ladies depart ment and fine arts of local fairs where some girls now become grandmothers or at least old enough have been exhibiting the same tea towels night gowns scarfs water colors etc for wpll nigh to half a century for this reason the canvassers for the annual contribution are not re ceived as cheerfully nor treated as generously as in other days the re sult is the cancellation of the show fair in various places in recent years it has frequently been suggested that greater good would be accomplished by additional sup port to the school fairs even at the expense of the old time county or township fair would be fully justi fied this is a matter that might well engage the attention of the minister stivers pastry
